The Daufuskie Island Conservancy (daufuskieislandconservancy.org) began working with the management of Haig Point in 2006 to bring recycling to Haig Point. In May, 2007, recycling began with a single 40 yard divided dumpster for collection of plastic, metals and clear glass. Over time, it morphed into more expansive recycling with more collection capacity. The recycling center now occupies a portion of a former greenhouse building and has expanded to single stream recycling as well as collection of e-waste, hazardous waste (paint and household chemicals), household batteries, used cooking oil, soft plastic packaging and foam eggs cartons/food trays. This effort has saved Haig Point thousands of dollars and has the full support of the community and management.
