P52 : 09 - Creating Mask From Text
No, I didn't learn to surf for this weeks Project 52. Although I've lived in New York for nearly a year so I may have well forgotten how to. I took this footage one day with my GoPro when I lived in Encinitas. I don't really like taking a camera out into the ocean because I find myself more concerned with getting "good shots" than I do just relaxing and enjoying the ocean. I had friend I use to surf with a lot who would always say how great it will be when they make a water proof cell phone so you can sit in the line up and take calls in between sets. I thought the reason people surfed was so they didn't have to take calls? Anyway, this week I didn't learn anything from a tutorial. Instead I wanted to just see what would happen if I put a word on some footage and then tried to manipulate the word by playing with different settings. First I used "Create Masks from Text". Then I animated the masks throughout the shot. You can get some pretty awesome effects when masks cross over each other. That's really it.
This isn't the only thing I learned this week though. Someone online emailed me and said they saw THIS cool animation and wondered if I could do something similar. I didn't know, so I decided I would just reproduce it for practice. I learned a lot in a short period of time trying to figure out stuff on my own. It has a way of opening up your ability to express your own voice. Now of course I can't post those results because copying to learn is great, but copying and passing it off as your own is lame (and illegal). But check out the VIDEO, it's really cool.
