Con Melino was drafted into the Italian Army at the age of nineteen and given six months training. He was then sent to fight in Libya. Captured by the British Army, Con spent five years in POW camps in Egypt, India and Australia. After the war, he and his wife Bella raised seven children in Australia while working as sugar cane farmers.
Throughout the ups and downs of his life, Con's greatest passion has remained Italian opera. He would sing while driving his tractor. "Not only to keep myself awake," he explains, "but also because music brings every happiness to my heart!"
