Thx4sharing. Enjoyed intense story. Opening ‘chasing’ wipes cool. I also like dystopia effects of 16mm, (sometimes disconcerting with ‘hairlines’ on the screen). I luv Medina Ship. Sad story, but some good family values coming in. Beautiful music score by German Ricaurte Pineda. Congrats to you ‘n ur crew. I've saved film to my blog 'n wld be cool to get u as guest reviewer on other Vimians' work some time? vimeo.com/channels/46808#5840765

I liked the cinematography and editing a lot.

The story didn't quite do it for me though. I think I like a little bit more explanation and details so you don't have to fill everything in yourself.

Was that a pomegranate? Why was it in the jar?
And the girl and the guy were friends at a young age? Why did it look like she was mean to him even as children? What was with the bread?

    Sorry for all the questions.
  • Ruben Fernández 2 months ago
as you said, you have to fill in everything yourself. not very cool a movie that can´t stand by itself. I could answer all the questions you posted, but i think it would take the fun of your own personal experience with the film. the only thing i am going to say is that it was a mango, not a pomegranate, and it was in a jar because it was part of the DNA collection inside the Oasis.

Great film! I really liked the locations you found for your post-apocalyptic universe! Did you do a lot of location scouting, or were you lucky to find an abandoned area that looked that cool? Also, I was wondering what kind of equipment you used to edit it? Did you do it old-school, or did you import the footage digitally and edit it on FCP or Avid?
  • Ruben Fernández 2 months ago
actually, i knew of the location since i was in high school and had always thought they would be cool to shoot a movie in. So when i wrote the script i knew i had the location to shoot in. Even though i am a fan of film origination, i believe the way to go in post is fully digital. So i made a transfer from the 16mm negative to DigiBeta, did an offline on premier, and then an online edit on Final Cut. Nowadays i have final cut pro in my computer, but back then, i still used pc.

Beautiful film. Ruben in my opinion you show a spectacular deep screen of post-apocaliptic world. Only 3D secuense isn't as rest of your film. But it's only detail.
  • Ruben Fernández 2 months ago
I know about the 3D sequence, we worked as hard as we could, but at the time i think it was the best we could come up with, with the knowledge and equipment we had.

This was fantastic! So well done! Bravo!
Might I ask, how did you make your costumes?! I want to make a post apocalyptic film but am not too talented when it comes to costume design, but yours just look so gritty and awesome. Were they done on a budget, or did you have someone specially design them? And how much? Any tips on how to make cool costumes like that?

Keep up the great work. :)
  • Ruben Fernández 2 months ago
Hi Tom, well, the costumes where done on a budget, I did a lot of research first though, and I knew that the gas masks, and rubber gloves and boots where a must, you always see 'em near radioactive or chemically sensitive sites. Next, I looked at a variety of army references, and a tailor copied for us the Israeli Defense Forces bulletproof vests, just the look. For the women I always knew I wanted the whole desert Tuareg look from morocco. And the old man with the red turban is a tribute to the flemish artist Jan van Eyck. So I think the key is not so how much money you spend but how much time you invest on careful research. In all I think we probably spent around 500 dollars on all the costumes, except the masks, which where loaned to us by a chemical industry(the mask used by the main character is actually expensive, around 2000 dollars).

    Hope it helps. Cheers.

Amazing music and cinematography. And the direction for the film must of been great because it looks great.

Though "the oasis" really didn't come into the story other than as motization for the main character. I wish it went on to see the oasis, or see the lack of the oasis.

    But overall, great job!
