In an attempt to create or at least simulate a swarm, I used the islands in the north of the Netherlands as inspiration. These islands move very slowly because the sea takes land away from one side and adds land to the other side of the island. In this case, the sand grains form a swarm together.

I simulated these moving sand grains by putting plastic balls in a container and shaking the container as a way of simulating the 'waves' of the sea. I painted some of the balls blue so I could track the movement and discern a pattern. This movement pattern was later translated into a poster.
