Ethan Zuckerman, Keynote Speaker for the 2013 Digital Media and Learning Conference, explains his take on a contemporary definition of "civics."

(5:15) "I'm not sure that we're necessarily teaching civics all that well. And, in many cases, I think the people who are teaching us civics or teaching us this new civics are activists who are trying to figure out how to use these tools in different and effective ways."

The DML2013 Conference will be held March 14-16 in Chicago, Illinois. The conference is supported by the MacArthur Foundation and organized by the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub located at the University of California's systemwide Humanities Research Institute at UC Irvine.

Ethan is interviewed in this video by Howard Rheingold, a cyberculture pioneer, social media innovator, and author of "Smart Mobs."
