Global Maternal Health Conference 2013

This session focused on a range of obstetric complications. MgS04 was discussed as a potential medicine that needs scaling up from demand to production of the drug, especially within countries that are not yet making it. In addition an application for the phone is being used to help providers with dosage of MgSO4. Another presentation focused on Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO) at a hospital in Mexico. Researchers found that using one program alone does not improve the results of obstetric complications as it does not address other needs of the hospital such as supply and attitudes of practitioners. The uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) was discussed as a program in Ghana which used low-cost UBTs to determine barriers and challenges to greater access and use of UBTs. Providers considered use of a UBT to be a pivotal intervention when other uterotonics fail and therefore recommended increased training and access to a simple and affordable device. In Nigeria a group studied the benefits of alkaline water in preventing maternal mortality and morbidity. Results included that the test group experienced no pregnancy related diseases, whereas the control group saw many pregnancy related unusual health issues. Another study focused on the use and stock of PPH supplies in hospitals in Tanzania. It was found that supplies were low, as was the use of these uterotonics and that it will be re-evaluated later to see what changes management has made for improvement. Finally the use of misoprostol in Tanzania was investigated resulting in the finding that an estimated 90% of misoprostol tabs are still needed given the need that was estimated.
