Some of the people that either live in or pass through Oslo every summer. Friends and strangers. Filmed with the GH1 and a Canon f1.8 Mk2 apart from a couple of shots with the stock lens. Mainly handheld. A touch of Magic Bullet Looks grading. 720p.

    Nice Julian! Shot in 720p?
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Yes 720p and slowed to 25p from 50p in cinema tools.

What settings are you using on the GH1? This looks fantastic!
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Thanks so much! I am proud of this little clip! I am using the Canon 1.8 lens and manually focusing as a result. Most of the settings are just exposure compensation either up or down. I cannot really adjust aperture with this lens on this camera. I am new to the GH1 and to photo cameras so I am just doing my best and playing with the settings.

love it. It seems the more people play with this camera the better the footage.

The camera is amazing believe me. Yes the 5D Mk2 has a bigger sensor etc but for the money and size and options.....this is it!

Splendid shots really. It is amazing what the camera can produce in right hands. Some sequences are stunning. You just convinced me in my metal struggle which camera to purchase, the Canon 5 mk2 or the GH1. Thanks
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Hope you make the best decision for you. The Canon has advantages of course but costs alot more and is bigger and heavier etc. Also shoots in 30p which is a bit of a pain! Good luck!

Julian, tell us more, typical shutters are you using, ND'S yes? Creative movie mode, full manual. The lens, what focal length?

Add to dvxuser please, this is getting close to Phil Bloom territory!
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Thanks for the kind words, I am new to DSLR cameras and as I am using a Canon 50mm f1.8 Mk2 this disables most of the cameras auto controls. I have used the creative close up setting alot on this film and the manual focus on the lens and only used control over exposure compensation on the camera. I did use an ND4 filter on alot of the shots.

This is great work, I love the way you get real close to their faces, you dare invade their comfort zone. Bravo!

If you don't mind, could you share some info on the music/artist? I thought it went well with the footage.
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Thankyou, actually I know alot of the people in the film so getting close was not too hard but also remember that when you put a 50mm lens on the GH1 you get x2 images as the sensor is about half the size of full frame....so a 50mm lens acts as a 100mm lens...meaning you can be further away.
The music is Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention "Who knows where the time goes?"

Excellent! have you been inspired by "Philip BLOOM"?
    Very nice work...
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
What do you think!!!!! Yes Philip Bloom is to blame for me buying the GH1 and starting this whole video thing!! 2 months ago I had no idea who he was and no idea what a DSLR was!! All I can say is that Philip Bloom is an inspiration and the GH1 is incredible.

This is very nice footage indeed with the GH1. Great job and I found the color to be excellent.

Do you shot at 1.8 aperture? Great images!
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
I am new to all this so I cannot be sure but when you use a Canon lens on the gh1 you cannot adjust aperture it seems... especially as the lens has no aperture ring. I could be wrong of course, it is all guesswork at this stage!
  •
  • Giacomo Aschacher 4 months ago
No you are right. So I think you shot at 1.8. Anyway you can change the aperture if you set the aperture on a Canon Camera, than you do a DOF preview, than you switch the lens between the Canon and the GH1! Not easy but it's the only way!
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
    Thanks for that!!!

Very nice. I just love these "portrait" images.

I recommend trying older Canon FD glass. They have manual aperture control and can be had for very cheap on eBay. I got my very nice 50 mm f/1.4 for $68 shipped. FD lenses work excellent on this camera!

the face were great. composition was very friendly and almost.. endearing..? if it can be described like that/

can you tell us, julian, being the owner of the canon and pana how the gh1 is most useful to you? i am very interested in this camera. i was wondering where you feel it has its strongest points.
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
I only have the Panasonic GH1, it is a great stills camera but I got it mainly for video and that is amazing! I use mainly a cheapish Canon EF lens 50mm 1.8 Mk2 and manual focus which is more attractive than using the lens that comes with the GH1. However the GH1 lens is a great lens but only 4.0 to 5.8.

Hi Julian, great film, I love it. I have just bought a GH1 and have borrowed some Canon FD 1.4f lenses and cant wait to get filming. I was wondering if you could explain how you are filming at 50p? Are you using the AVCHD SH setting and then just slowing it down? I am using FCP... Thanks.
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
In Europe PAL is 720 50p...in cinema tools you can slow the clip by changing frame rate to 25p!!

A great short video with your GH1. Head and shoulder shots that absolutely define SLR Video photography. The 50mm (100mm equivalent) is a great portrait lens.

I have a GH1 with the stock lens...I can afford One prime......35mm or 50mm the agony!

  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
Thankyou Bob, you have some great videos yourself! Remember the 50mm lens will magnify x2 as the GH1 sensor is half 35mm sensor size. Maybe a 35mm would be better!?

  • lovely work Julian,
couple of comments. Love the magic hour shooting wouldn't touch that.
Couple of the shots could be enhanced by having a battery operated light like a lite panels or Switronix light if you have an assistant to just handhold the light to give you touch a of light to key or fill, depending. I find it very handy. Also you did a fade down at one point and fade back up to the same woman, I dig your fades just have a different shot when you fade back up. Think of a fade like a end of a paragraph and you need to change the subject. And of course that is not a harden fast rule.
Just little things you can do to an already Beautiful video.

Great advice from the master! Thankyou Steve.

i wouldn't listen to much to him Julian. although the fade to the same girl did stick out.

Very nice job and a really great example of GH1 filming.

Nice work Julian. This camera looks awsome. Where did you get the Canon lens adapter and how does it work for you. I have canon lenses but I haven't seen an adapter that will allow all the functions to work with the GH1. Is there such an animal? Thanks
  • julian davies plus 4 months ago
I am using EF not FD lenses and the adapter is from RJ Cameras on e bay, based in China. It is a Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds adapter. There is no adapter that allows the lenses to use all the camera's auto functions. You can of course buy micro four thirds lenses or four thirds lenses with an adapter and then have all functions available.

Is there any use for on-board sound capture at all? Are all "live" ambient sounds ("Hey, why are you pointing that camera at me?") a distraction? Would it be fine if all video be shot silent, with music added later?

    I am grappling with this.
  • julian davies plus 3 months ago
That is a personal choice, the mic on the GH1 is good but pro audio must be recorded seperately. You can attach a proper mic to the camera though.
  •
  • Trina Donaldson 3 months ago
The beauty of humanity..and a cameo appearance as well! The silence was a perfect choice as it was a soundtrack that didn't try to tell the viewer how to think about the faces he/she was viewing.
  • julian davies plus 2 months ago
    There should be music...try again!!

As was said in a previous comment I think watching videos like this really makes ones mind up as which DSLR camera to get. I was toying with the Canon 5DMkII or the GH1, but for the value and quality it has to be the GH1, but the only problem is I cannot get hold of one in the UK, only from online retailers.
It's credit to yourself that you managed to pull off such stunning shots, being pretty new to the DSLR. This will no doubt inspire camcorder users like me to trade up........Christmas is Canceled
  • julian davies plus 2 months ago
Thanks Woody, we need more footage from YOU!! To be honest now that I have learned alot more about these dslr cameras...I do think the Canon 7d and 5dmk2 are better in many ways than the gh1. Gh1 is smaller and lighter and very easy to use and has files that are easy to edit on a mac. However the 7d has all the framerate options and a slightly bigger sensor...better low light... and better photos. THe 5d hasa huge sensor and has the best depth of field...really shallow! Although you pay for that with the horrible 30p option in a format hard to edit. It is hard to know!!!! I say wait a bit longer..there will be something new in the coming months I am sure....rumours are of a new canon next year that will have the 7d features with a full frame sensor!!!
