Russel Harvey interviews Lew Anderson, Howdy Doody's Clarabell the Clown, 1989. 30 Min.
This interview is preceded by a three minute highlight reel, featuring some of the notable guests from the early years of RUSSEL HARVEY ALMOST LIVE.
Russel Harvey says: "People often ask me, 'What is your greatest achievement in broadcasting?' I always say, 'That's easy. I'm the guy who got Clarabell the Clown to talk!' Lew Anderson was a musician at NBC during the Golden Age of Television when Buffalo Bob Smith chose him to be the third, and last, person to play Clarabell the Clown on the Howdy Doody Show. Smith later wrote that Lew was also the best Clarabell! Lew's appearance on RUSSEL HARVEY ALMOST LIVE is of historical significance: It is the only in-depth television interview with this wonderful man, who was a special friend to a generation of Baby Boomers; and a marvelous musician, composer, arranger and bandleader. Lew Anderson's All American Big Band performed right up until Lew died at age 84 in 2006. Clarabell will stay with us forever."
