MTT 2013 Grammy® Award Winner
Best Orchestral Performance for John Adams “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”
Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony capped their Centennial Season Opening Gala program with a Grammy winning orchestral and multimedia performance of Short Ride in a Fast Machine. Obscura collaborated with MTT to surprise guests with an encore that transformed the interior of the Davies Symphony Hall into a spectacular architectural projection experience. The audience was taken on a high-speed visual journey through San Francisco’s past, present, and future, with an abstract collage of the city’s rich cultural history portrayed through its landmark architecture. Obscura’s team created an immersive show using historical footage, newly captured shots, and 3D computer motion graphics. These iconic visual elements were then strategically coordinated with the John Adams musical score, and performed live along with the San Francisco Symphony as conducted by MTT. This performance is featured on the San Francisco Symphony at 100 DVD.
