ABOUT "STEVE"
Steve is a quintessential All-American guy. Simultaneously haunted by both his past and yet-unrealized future, he fights a losing battle against multiple addictions while crushed under the weight of the expectations of others as he perceives, for the first time, the forfeiture of his youth at the expense of blind ambition. Riddled with hidden doubt from the outset, we watch insecurity and loneliness seep into his cracking mind as he discovers that "what is" is vastly different than "what was" and "what might [never] be"...

After playing "Steve" in Cole Sternberg's performance art pieces at Art Basel in Miami and the opening of the Caruso Art Gallery in LA, I thought it'd be fun to play with the character and explore him a little more around the neighborhood with my iPhone for filmmaking practice with my buddy Dylan.

This probably sounds weird but I tried to compose, act, shoot and edit this video without words - whether out loud OR in my head. Nodding to Simon Sinek's "Ted Talk" on leaders and what inspires, I tried to do the whole thing from "gut feel," essentially trying to film solely from my limbic brains and leaving the neocortex completely out of the picture (as much as possible, anyway). So I hope the video gives you an intense "feel" that maybe you can't necessarily describe verbally...

I also composed the guitar rythm at the end and recorded it off the cuff on my iPhone with the built-in speaker (I'd obviously record it properly if I was going to use it for anything, but it gets the job done here). The other 2 pieces of temp music I sampled are Ministry's Rio Grande Blood (the heavy metal piece) and Tom Barabas' Adagio (the piano instrumental).

This was purely for acting/filming practice and fun - learning by doing is the best way to go! Now get out there and do something! :)
