University of Phoenix, Deloitte, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and The Manufacturing Institute have joined together in an effort to examine the state of women in the manufacturing industry with the STEP Ahead initiative – women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Production. STEP Ahead examines and promotes the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, exploration, education, and leadership.
Labor statistics show that more than 600,000 manufacturing jobs are currently unfilled and that women are severely underrepresented in the manufacturing workforce and in leadership ranks. The STEP initiative aims to highlight ways in which companies can successfully attract, advance, and retain strong female talent in the manufacturing industry.
In February 2013, University of Phoenix and partners gathered in Washington, D.C., to honor over 122 women in manufacturing at the first annual STEP awards. These women represent not only excellence in their respective fields of science, technology, engineering, and production, but also an unrelenting dedication to learning and a thirst for progress.
Watch the video below to learn more about these women and their increasingly important role in the manufacturing industry.
