Frank W. Buckles is the last living United States Veteran of World War I.

I made this little piece about him and his recollection of WWI.

I hope you enjoy it.

Fantastic. An invaluable subject to document, a warm character with quality information and experiences. And great shots too!

And I just realized The Archive was also your work. Your productions are incredibly important.

Loved getting to know this guy but the question about Iraq was out of place. It had nothing to do with the story of this veteran. Wars will continue until the extintion of mankind. What's the point asking some 107 year old man about it?

Other than that it was great. He seemed like a nice old guy with a lot of stories to tell. I would love to shake his and and thank him for his service to this country whether right or worng or whatever the reason we got into that war or any other. I hope we would have the same respect for our military and vets involved in the middle east as well.

In January my wife will be deploying for 12 months to Afghanistan. I certanily hope she will see 107 year old.

I agree fantastic documentary! There should be a special place in the Smithsonian for pieces like this.

The bit about Iraq though would probably be one of the first questions I would want to ask the veteran about though. Maybe not so much about Iraq specifically, but more along the lines how he has seen the theater of war change throughout his lifetime. He has definitely lived through a bunch of them.

I felt that his perspective about war was very relevant to the piece.
  • Karen Irvine plus 1 year ago
I thought the bit about Iraq was relevant. It's his opinion of how things are now. The fact that a WWI vet, and especially an elder of 107 years feels this way should say something to the rest of us.

This is an amazing docu, and has captured the personality of Frank. Well done!

Excelllent editing and gathering of thoughts into a succint documentary.

BTW, you certainly know how to use the "B" rolls/shots.
Also, I don't know if you realize it... but, historically... the stuff you are doing will continue to have significant value into the future.

What a great story. Mr. Buckles is so sharp, the editing is paced perfectly. I enjoyed hearing the details of his involvement in WWI, as well as his thoughts on modern war, it gives perspective.

Powerful work, now I see why producer Scott Lynch picked you to be in the next FilmFellas on Documentary filmmaking. Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow as you join the Documentary FilmFellas cast. As you represent the up and coming generation of Documentary filmmakers you are going to bring a lot to this cast with fellow cast members David Grubin (The American Experience) and Ondi Timoner (We Live in Public).

  • I liked a lot your documentaries. Your are gulty of having me "lost" most of the morning looking them all :)
  •
  • Sean, your work continues to be an inspiration. I appreciated his insight into Iraq, and see it as a perfectly valid question for many reasons. For one, WW I was also known as "the war to end all wars" -- therefore, for me, the question was begged ... how does he feel about the fact that his efforts did not contribute to the war that ended all wars, but that contributed to what just continued to be a pattern of US foreign policy? Well done and thank you for this contribution.

  • Ed David plus 11 months ago
Goodbye Mr. Buckles - we used the Panasonic HVX00 with a SG PRO Rev2 35mm lens adapter - the image was upside down and you had to flip it in post. The good old days. Frank Buckles was a true gentlemen and one of the finest people I ever witnessed speaking during an interview. He's from a different era - an era of being a gentleman and enjoying a long summer day and the time to talk. It was truly a gift to be given the chance to meet him. I hope I'm half the man he is when I grow up.

some nice words ed. this video inspired me and i shot a doc/interview with a 100 year old woman that has beaten cancer 5 times. she is interesting but she didn't quite express how amazing her life has been and i couldn't quite capture it like you guys have done..(well i'm editing it now so i hope it'll turn out okay) anyway great work, i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very inspiring, I love the way he speaks openly against war as only a veteran would.
