This sequence was cut from the final movie, where Eddie Murphy's character feels the squirrels running up and down his body as he is spiritually connected to the tree.
The fur shadows are pre-baked in a low res image sequence, using Lightwave's Surface Baking Camera. Then applied as a color map to the fur, therefore it was not necessary to trace fur shadows for final 2k render, which cut render time from 3 hours to 45 minutes.
The plate was front projection mapped onto proxy meshes for the tree, ground and environment, so global illumination would cast the plate color onto the squirrels.
