I made this video in 1990 at the bequest of the Keith Haring estate. I met Keith in ACTUP, the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power. I became close to him during political demonstrations and during the painting of the murals in the bathroom of the Gay Community Center. So close to him that I could smell him sweat as he painted, raw, masculine, powerful, sensual. A few friends (we were all in our early 20's) had volunteered to help carry supplies for him, white and black paint mostly, and brushes, ladders, drops. Then we got to help paint, unbelievable. He is my hero. A man who was willing and able to expose you to art even if it meant his arrest. He died Feb 16, 1990. And this video premiered at a fundraiser in his honor for ACTUP NY at the Palladium Nightclub later that year. I shot a few bits of super 8, but all of the footage I arranged in the editing room from a 3/4" tape Keith had made of all his favorite media events (3/4 was a primitive format to work with even in 1990.) The music was some of his favorites at the time. The hand drawn animation, which is looped several times, is the only hand drawn animation he ever made. A gift so bittersweet. This is a mano et mano love letter to Keith Haring, gratefully drawn with the help of a master. The title refers to a great painter of street dancers. He was that and more.
