1. Cover creation
After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs.

On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens.

Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder.

The music was used with permission by The Brokenmusicbox.

wow, that's exactly what I do ... except not on that level! i must say that this is my favorite video! great job, and thank you for giving us an insight of how much work that gets put into a cover! thank you!

Seriously, at this level of professionalism every pixel is accounted for ! It's really amazing at how seemingly simple this image is until you get to witness the whole process. Just the lighting stage was polished to perfection. Fantastic outcome guys !

very cool, i didn't know so much work was put into the cover.

i was wondering also, what were the intervals between shutters?

How did you achieve the timelapse using the Mark II? Bunch of stills, but how was it automated? Thanks!
  •
  • Peter Belanger plus 1 year ago
    Thanks for everyone.

Minh Bui, for the most part the intervals were 5 sec. For somethings like the walking it was faster.

Perfect-Day-Images, I used Canon EOS Utility to capture still images about every 5 seconds. QuickTime was used to assemble them and Final Cut Pro to make the movie.

This is a pretty sweet video. I never thought that making a cover was so labor-intensive. I have one off-topic question though.

Where'd you get that giant glazed donut? Do want!

Hi. Really nice video which turns out to be quite handy and useful for some people interested in design !

I just have one question : what's the font you used for the title of that vid ? I think I kind of fell in love with it. ;-)
  •
  • Peter Belanger plus 1 year ago
    thomasbdl: the font was Gotham.

Harry Cartwright: We found The Brokenmusicbox on myspace and contacted them for the use of their music. We will not use music unless permitted. You can try contacting other musicians directly and just hope for the best. Good luck.

As a former newsstand AD I have to say this brought back some great memories.

Kudos on the piece. I REALLY liked the way you moved the camera around during the intervals. Most people would stick the camera on a tripod and let the scene play on in front of the lens. You got the viewer involved and I loved it.

    Cheers

This is an incredible insight into the obviously much thought about area of the magazine cover, sculpted down to the last detail to grab our attention and make us want to buy the magazine. It's obviously such a fine art and you showcase it brilliantly here. I'll never look at a magazine cover in the same way again!

Now you need a making of video of the making of video! I really liked pushing in to see detail of prop placement, and then pulling back out. Much better than a "stuck in one spot" time lapse.
