An independent documentary I am currently filming and developing.
At a time when globally bee populations are dramatically decreasing, African bees show no signs of being affected, they are flourishing. Beginning of 2009, the most serious of all bee diseases, 'american foulbrood'. Although present all over the rest of the world, is for the first time discovered in Sub-Saharan Africa. The film follows the unfolding events as South African beekeepers attempt to understand and bring a previously absent disease's outbreak under control.
The African bee must fight its biggest battle ever as it attempts to build a natural tolerance to this overwhelming infection. The African beekeeper braves huge losses while refusing to treat, respecting the genetic integrity of the wild bee but just how many losses can the beekeeping industry take until it collapses? How far will the disease leave its path of destruction? Only nature has the answer.
