26. WEEK.in.RAB
These are few shots that were taken on the island of Rab, at Croatian coast. I was shooting music video over there and I was left with over 200GB of files that nobody will ever see. NOT. 3hrs edit and here is why you should come to Croatia sometimes ...

Great movement. Kept it interesting. Seems like you went out of your way to get to unique spots. That also added to it.

I used very simple wannabe dolly and yes ... a dull thing can look interesting if the shot has some movement ... I need follow focus like... yesterday!

THX for your comments, Regis - this is not my work, this is my free time/will/experiment. I work with those heavy, big, horrible, useless broadcast cameras, this is me showing what can you do with these tiny cameras. Everything is small and light to carry, from light tripods to light steadicams, for me it's a logistical revolution. Picture quality is another issue and post production is special horror story but - it's great to look at HD and even more - it's great to read comments you people write. I am proud to be a part of vimeo and all the positive energy that is spreading around it. THX again.
  • Nathan Bloch 3 months ago
Why do you say picture quality is another issue? You're not happy with it compared to larger video cameras? A lot of people think this has better picture quality than many top of the line video cameras, including the Red.

Shots were taken with Canon 5dmkII + primes (14mm,24mm,24mmTSE,50mm,135mm,200mm), along with libec mobile dolly, steadicam pilot and the most important thing - with Elvir, best assistant you can get.
Post was done on a horrible PC machine (ohhh this is going to be the LAST job on PC - ever!)

Predivan video!

As I am very surprised about how many of you watched and liked this video, I am going to re-edit it in full version and some color corrections and without my assistant apearing in it. This footage wasn't intended to be serious one, rather a 3 hrs playing on timeline. I mean...really...
I was on RAB shooting a music video for some 2 local guys wrote and few well known croatian musicians joined singing it together. Should I bring it online ?

    This looks so beautiful!

What camera did you shoot with?
Also when watching, I noticed that alot of the shots have the edges of the frame out of focus, how did you do that? It looks awesome!
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 4 months ago
24mm TSE tilt shift lens is the guilty one for weird focus fields ... ppl use it to correct perspectives , I use it to mess logical focus field...AE without AE.
  • Carter Yocham 4 months ago
and just wondering, I really liked the footage, but do you like the tilt shift lense? I have been looking at them and I haven't decided if I like them or not.

Once in a while we see something that completely fills or our soul with a peacefull mood that lasts for hours. This is a really great piece of art, something I just cant take my eyes and mind away from it. I was imediatly transported to this romantic and peaceful place, it's just like a dream.
Thanks for turning my day into a much brighter and joyful day.
You did a great job capturing all the footage and your mastery in editing is just sawesome and light years away from the ordinary human mind.
One of the best clips I've seen in the past days, not to say for weeks.
    Best regards.

I am surprised you used six prime lens. How many of them you used on the steadycam? It must be tedius to adjust the balance all the time.
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 3 months ago
On this little steadicam I tend to use only 14mm f2.8 that is known to be very sharp in general so it's a natural choice for ultra wide. Other lens that has almost the same weight and balance (so you actually don't need to reconfigure you steadi setup) is 24mm f1.4 II ... but as any quality lens it's sensible to precise focusing .... differences between 1m or 3m is biggggg.
Very rarely I use 50 mm f1.2 on it..only when I need something extra.
    I don't have follow focus just yet....SOON
  • Yin Wang 3 months ago
    Thank you for the information.
The distortion is not as bad as I would expect for a 14mm. Did you crop the video?
What gadget will you use for follow foucs? The steadycam is so small, I am worried that the lens movement will unbalance the system.
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 3 months ago
Only solution for the follow focus is remote kind of ... and it has to be very small (remote controller) in order to fit on small handle for your right hand ... it is the only place you can put a remote controller unit.
14mm is an expensive prime ... look it up, there was no zoomin' whatsoever.

Nobody can advise the author what do with his creation. Nevertheless I dare to say that previous variant of your "Week.." was more concentrated and electrified with inspiration. That dancing heavy guy - I just love his movements and expression of his face! That guy which throws his hands from his heart - lovely! And it was exciting to see the author, to watch how he walks ( Mickael Jackson's walk), what kind of equipment does he have, how strong are hands that provide such a stability for this great shooting...Moments of focus-shifting from the boat rope to the water - so cool! I wouldn't shrink it! Everything was fiting as nicely as glove. I don't want to go to RAB because I'm sure I will find the weaker version of the island in the reality than in your master-piece. It would be pleasant to see your former clip back next to the latter one. I can feel your soul's admiration in the first shot. And second one is more add-like. Art- creator against art-dealer- so to say. Or too many against too good! Best wishes!
    Respectfully...
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 3 months ago
Well the first one was edited in an hour and it was sort of .. I don't know ... run&gun leftovers shots without any gold or purpose. Next thing were comments from all over and I felt that I should actually make something out of it. And yes, I removed my self and my assistant from the movie and that's about it, it doesn't have any commercial value or purpose exept to present our week n Rab, nothing more.

Why do you say picture quality is another issue? You're not happy with it compared to larger video cameras? A lot of people think this has better picture quality than many top of the line video cameras, including the Red.
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 3 months ago
I had 24p/25p/30p conversion trouble in mind. As you know the mk2 is 29,97 fps camera and not 24p or even 25p or 25i and in europe broadcasting is done in 25i so the flickering elements are the issue. Many people uses lot of different techniques to deliver a non flickering picture on SD PAL. Well ... nothing is perfect but you know what ... I coupled one of my mk2's with a big 600mm ...ohhh too bad I didn't have this toy on Rab ...
  •
  • Nathan Bloch 3 months ago
Yeah, most people I know use Final Cut Pro to do the conversion and say that it looks great. But it sounds like you don't have any problems with the picture quality itself -- is that right? Are you happy with how your images look on big screens?
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 3 months ago
Happy. I would like a sound level control on canon and remote FF which isn't impossible since all EF lenses have USM focusing motor in it and it's controlled via DSLR body's controls ... so it's possible ... I don't get why CANON is so slow on these issues...aren't they ones that get OUR money. CMoN ..you could start thinking it's other way around - only it's NOT.

Marco, I dont need to goto Croatia now..
You've done my travelling fo rme.. :-)
    Bravo...

I have heard you complain about your PC, I seem to have issues working with Prem.
Is there a secret to importing this files? or do you convert them down to someting?
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 2 months ago
You can do something if you convert original files into : MPEG2 data rate 40MB/s, leave frame rate at 29,97 and convert...now you will be able to edit it as long you dont have 200 GB in BIN ... I have sold out my PC ...I have a MacbookPro and it seems to work just fine on FCP and Prores workflow. I don't have good enough reason to go on MACpro ... everything works on this little bastard.
  •
  • Peter Miranda plus 2 months ago
    LOL, that little bastard...

So youre saying that if I sell my PC and buy a Macbook Pro, I can import my original files from my MarkII, edit in FCP without it stalling, jittering, wanting to blow up?

Or do you think, I keep my pc and upgrade to an i7 Chip?
  •
  • Marko Butrakovic plus 2 months ago
NO no , originals still need to be converted, in this case via MPEG STREAMCLIP into PRORES or if you have space limitations then xdcam EX 30p is your setup. But I still recommend propres over xdcam. MPEG does the conversions 3x faster than adobe media encoder. Go FCP.
  •
  • Peter Miranda plus 2 months ago
    Thanks for the insight Marko.
Apart from needing a tutorial in workflow by a pro like yourself,
There are so many tutorials out there but they are a little advanced or just not making sense to the likes of me.
A still photog that has an eye for film, who wants to make the transition, who has over 50 hours of footage sitting on his hard drive and still wonders why he cant edit smoothly...
I feel like Im driving a Ferrari but stuck in first gear...

Could you please tell me what programs will the following,

    for example;
    1. use this program to convert .MOV to MPG Stream Clip..
    1a: Import Settings are _____ ______ ______ _____

    2. Edit in FCP or PREMIER:

    3. Export setting are _____ ______ ______ _____
    3a. Export for DVD Burn.
3b. Export for Vimeo - ( I know this one)

    4. Make all those people who keep breaking my balls about the footage happy.

    5. Thank Marko, will buy a Zagrebačka for him.

I hope there are other people out there, I feel a little silly asking so many questions, but i feel that there are plenty of others who are just embarrassed to ask..

    Thanks in advance
