As the bail hearing of paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius continues, an investigator testified Wednesday that needles and two boxes of testosterone were found in the home where Pistorius shot his girlfriend, model and reality TV star Reeva Steenkamp.
According to South Africa’s News24, Pistorius’ defense claimed testosterone is an herbal supplement, not a banned substance and that Pistorius thought he was shooting an intruder, not his girlfriend.
“The first officer on the scene says he believes a cricket bat was used to break down the bathroom door. Also, he believes the gunshots were aimed specifically at the toilet, not just randomly into the bathroom door.”
The New York Times reports the investigator who took the stand today also said they found unlicensed ammunition in Pistorius’ home and that neighbors reported hearing loud fighting from the home prior to the shooting.
“But the defense disputed the prosecution testimony, saying the neighbor who claimed to have overheard an argument in Mr. Pistorius’s home in fact lived 600 yards away.”
The athlete became well known worldwide after he became the first double-amputee to compete in the Olympics. The BBC reports, thanks to that accomplishment, this case has captured media attention around the world.
“We are seeing the world's media converging outside, and, of course, inside the court. // While this goes on, a huge amount of speculation in all of the newspapers...”
The Telegraph is calling the case a “media circus” and is questioning if it will be “South Africa’s version of the OJ Simpson trial”
Considering all the media coverage and Pistorius’ claim he is innocent, it didn’t necessarily come as surprise when Eyewitness News Pretoria correspondent Barry Bateman tweeted
“#OscarPistorius is now pursuing a civil claim against the complainant for wrongful arrest, false claims...”
The prosecution is opposing bail under the pretense Pistorius is considered a flight risk.
