Many software implementations in healthcare have not lived up to their potential because systems often do not meet the user's needs. In typical software design projects, domain experts, such as dentists, are paired with programmers and database experts during system development. However, merely interviewing a domain expert without any deep knowledge of the content area often produces only a superficial understanding of how the actual work is being done, which is inadequate for designing useful systems.
Contextual Design is a backbone for organizing a customer-centered design process in which the user is both a customer and a partner during development. Based on empirical evidence, Contextual Design is one of most reliable methods to produce useful and usable systems. In this module, you will learn about the Contextual Design and Contextual Inquiry (CI) methods, and apply CI to a real-life scenario.
