Twidgets 7: Stave Churches
"Twidgets" is a home video documenting Kristen and Heather Hagen's vacation to Norway in August, 2008. The morning we left Sognefjellshytta for the nearest town of Lom, we were making a forty minute drive with which Snow White was already very familiar. We wound our way through narrow valleys past cascading waterfalls, mountain lakes and what little freely roaming livestock there was room for.
As we left the mountains behind, we made a quick stop at the enchanting Elveseter Hotel (see photos below, more on Flickr) and its famous Sagasøyla column. The hotel was as much a traditional Norwegian art gallery as a quaint accommodation. We would have stayed there ourselves were it not for my connections at Sognefjellshytta, and I would recommend Elveseter to anyone passing through the area.
Another detour was up a steep mountain toll road in a wager that the clouds would give us a close-up glimpse of Norway's highest peak, Galdhøpiggen (8,100 ft.). The clouds were uncooperative, but we were instead rewarded by a surprise encounter with a roaming herd of wild reindeer against the ironic backdrop of a rainbow!
Arriving in Lom, we grabbed a bite to eat, consisting of the Norwegian classics of rømmegrøt (porridge) and waffles with jam and sour cream. Then it was on to attractions like Norway's most comprehensive precious stone museum and the town's eight-hundred year old stave church, which is still in regular use today. It was one of several stave churches we visited, which are also included in this seventh episode of Twidgets.
