A short film about an afforestation project by Bujagali Energy Ltd (BEL).
Info: In the first phase of riverbank afforestation, BEL facilitated local groups on both banks within the project affected area to grow seedlings and plant trees on land adjacent to the river banks downstream of the Bujagali project.
BEL identified four existing community based tree nursery operators and strengthened their capacity through training. In addition, six new groups were formed and trained in nursery bed operations and tree planting.
Three Ecosystem Management Committees(EMC) with 30 members for each of the districts of Jinja, Mukono and Kayunga, that were originally formed by National Environment Management Authority were reorganised and formally registered by the districts. The committees (90 people in total) were responsible for planting and maintenance of trees.
Over 530,000 trees were planted on 444 hectares between Bujagali dam and Kalagala falls. Tree maintenance was done for a period of one year after planting.
The first phase of riverbank afforestation started in March 2008 and was implemented in over 30 villages till June 2010.
Tree planting on BEL land upstream of the project started after reservoir filling.
The object of the exercise was to:
1) Stabilize the land against erosion
2) Carbon off-setting / environmental work / rainfall
3) Mitigate loss of animal terrestrial habitat within Jinja Wildlife Sanctuary
