I shot these clips this afternoon and edited them into this short piece this evening. As the film developed I felt the wind turbine started to feel like a giant clock overseeing time as peoples lives happened around it.

As a lot of the clips were of people going about there lives in various situations the film began to be about making the time to do the things we love as it does not stop and wait for us.

I really enjoy making these short emotive films in a single day, I guess it's more like painting or photography than traditional film making as my creations happen so quickly, but that's one of the ways I make the most of my time, and I love doing it.

The footage was shot at Castle Acre and Swaffham, both in North Norfolk, UK.

Camera: Sony PMW-EX1
Music: Biffy Clyro // Diary of Always

I really enjoyed the film, the pace you set with the Turbine was right on. It reminded me of the times I was able to get shots that just seemed to match and work into an almost destined video. Thanks, Keith

Thanks Keith. I find that I have to rely on that happening with these short films, and I prefer it that way. I generally go and capture some of what's happening around me and then once the parts start to fit together the overall theme starts to come out on it's own and I just do what I can to enhance it.

I'm sure a lot of the direction is driven by how I'm feeling at the time and of course the emotions that come from watching the things I capture and listening to any music that I work to.

really good work! all of your shots are really cool. great light you captured. I'm really curious to know what you edited with and what your compression settings were. I watched it with 'HD off' and it looks so good. How did you do it?
  • Paul Joy 9 months ago
Hi there. It was edited in final cut. Firstly I exported it as a quicktime file using the cameras native format (XDCAM) then opened the mov in quicktime and re-exported at h264 compression 5000 kbps 1280x720.

    Hope this helps

Beautiful piece. Even the opening title is wonderfully composed. The depth of field is awesome. Is that with the stock lens? Is the re-timed sequences overcranked in camera or done in Final Cut? and did you use any FCP optical flow? And did you cut it in XDCAM codec?
  • Paul Joy 8 months ago
    Thanks.

All shot with just the stock lens, overcranking was done on camera (720p/25 oc'd to 60). No optical flow used at all, and yes it was edited using the XDCAM codec.

    regards

    Paul.

Amazing. These are the results I am hoping to get soon. The music was very cool and definitely created a mood for the film.
When there are people in the shot, did you ask for them to be in it, or did you just capture, and then explain later?
  • Paul Joy 9 months ago
I just film them, generally for natural shots it's best to zoom in and try to be as unobtrusive as possible, it's often easier in a crowd as then nobody feels like they are the subject.

I'll quite often set the shot and then look away from the camera so that people feel less self conscious.

It's quite rare for people to ask why I'm filming, and when they do they normally ask if they are going to be on the telly.

I want to be able to accomplish the same thing one day, just shoot in the day and edit it at night. Something about speeding up the whole video process but having a high quality product like this really appeals to me. Great job, you've inspired me!

Another well done job by Paul Joy. The music mixed in with the shots really is a work of art. The editing is well done too. Again.. nice job..

Nice Video. But on the first picture in your clip, you can clearly see the rolling shutter effekt (artefact) on the rotor. Or is that just because of the compression for this website?
  • Paul Joy 7 months ago
I'm not sure what you mean, I don't think it's moving fast enough for any rolling shutter effect to be apparent.

There is some banding on the opening shot, this was due to the compression during the fade in from black.

    What I mean is:
When a wing of the turbine is moving into the picture, the wing should have a straight line. But it is not. You can see stairs (I don t know another expression).
  • Paul Joy 7 months ago
I don't see any stair stepping on the original or the compressed file, although if I pause the compressed file I can see macro blocking on the wing, which is a compression artifact and certainly nothing to do with the rolling shutter. This does not appear in the original file at all.

Hi Paul - you are truly an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your work with the world. I just purchased an HDR CX7 - and was pleased to find you shooting some footage on the CX6. Making videos is not my livelihood, but is definitely a passion I've always had. So I'm really green with the process. I have a mac and a pc. I've used imovie, pinnacle, and trialing sony vegas. What program would you recommend I use for an affordable editing solution for someone who likes tinkering? The obstacles i'm facing with owning a Sony is compatibility...(blah!)
