The Nikon D300 has a built in intervalometer, which I used for the timing. It also has a "D-lighting" mode, which is essentially a built-in single frame HDR compressor, which I turned on to increase the contrast in the sky.
These were shot as full-res jpgs, which I then scaled down to 720p with "Fast stone photo resizer" and then glued together with mencoder.
Easy? =)
