Tibet 1987. I traveled overland from Japan in September 1987. By boat from Osaka to Shanghai, and then train via Xi'an to Xining and to Golmud, where I boarded a local bus for the 24 hours journey to Lhasa. Arrived totally exhausted and affected by the drastic altitude change (from sea level to 5000m) to Lhasa that lies on ca. 3500 meters. I was laid out in Snowland hotel for three days. Then I spent another five weeks traveling around Tibet. Returned from Samye gompa the same day the riots broke out in Lhasa. Suddenly no one was allowed to enter or leave Lhasa for ten days. Curfews and searches was in place. Wounded Tibetans fled to the mountains to escape the Chinese police. Foreign doctors was taken blindfolded to help the hidden wounded Tibetans. Eventually I left by the same route I had come by, local bus to Golmud and the train back to Shanghai. For full documentation about the riots please see the movie: "Cry of the Snow Lion":
