Best demo reel ever! I think I've watched it 60 times in the last hour. The fact that I've worked on Rhinoceros Eyes which is featured on this reel makes it even better!

not physically possible. u could only watch us around 30 times in one hour... hahahahaha

Maybe he's got it open in two browser windows playing simultaneously, on repeat, for one hour.
That's the only possible way to harness the full awesomeness of this demo reel.

  • Dualitypro 3 months ago
Wow dude, seriously? I would never hire you based on this reel, I would actually use this to show people how NOT to make a demo reel. Have you actually submitted that to any potential employers? I'll give you credit for creativity and originality, but that's about it. Even if it's supposed to be a joke, it's not really funny and the quality of work itself is marginal at best. Learn something about the industry, figure out what you actually want to do, get good at something, then put together a reel like everyone else who actually has a job in film production.

And Keith Rivers is my hero. Love you buddy.

    @ Dualitypro:

I don't think you could be more wrong.
I've been a professional film maker for the last 20+ years.
I have run my own production companies, owned my own businesses and been responsible for employing people for a large portion of that time.
And I just sent this link to all my film making friends, encouraging them all to watch.
Sure the work itself is not all great, but the person behind the work is funny, creative and obviously brave.
Sure, I'd not try and use this to sell a job to a client or investor, but I'd say it's a wonderful calling card to the industry - especially as it naturally filters out those people who do not have the sense of humour to appreciate it.
And, I ask you, who would want to work with THEM?

    Paul-

I'm not trying to be mean or hurtful, I'm trying to be brutally honest to someone that seems young and ignorant to how the industry works. I think that anyone who says it's amazing or grounds for employment is either naive or doing this guy a big disservice. I've worked for a lot of big post/VFX companies, including Digital Domain and Sony Pictures Imageworks, and this guy has not displayed a single reason to hire him on any level. Maybe I would hire him to write comedy songs if I needed to come up with the next "I'm on a boat", but as it stands now it is an a) unprofessional and b) unfocused. No one gets hired for being a generalist anymore, anyone who wants a legitimate job in the industry needs to have a focused reel that shows a particular set of skills laid out clearly and concisely. I have a great sense of humor and anyone who has been out drinking with me can attest to it, but as someone who has been consistently working in high-end feature film/commercial jobs for the past few years, I'm trying to give this guy a tip.

Sure, points for originality and points for balls, but this will not get him a job. If I'm wrong, I will eat this keyboard.

    Duality,
What can I say, if y'man Pfaff worked in Jo'burg, I'd be meeting him next week and trying to find ways to work with him.

And this from a middle aged man who has written feature films and drama series and worked for the past 15 years on high end blue chip corporate films.

Skills can be taught, abilities improved, techniques honed - that certain something, that creative spark, that raw sense of bravado - that can't be taught.

Now, sure, there's lots of 'corporate' production companies that might not be attracted by this reel, but like I say, that makes it a perfect filter.

I'm 42, I've been in the business since I was 18 and hiring people since I was twenty, and I can say in all honesty, I like this reel. Not because of what it is, but because of what it hints at ... Potential being the most valuable commodity in our business.

And I'm willing to bet that he'll find others that see that too. It's the kind of work that goes viral and attracts people who will respond to the raw honesty of it.

    You, maybe not. No problem.

The kind of people you work with, maybe not. Also fine.

But that does not mean our industry is homogenised and that here are not people who will see past what Mr Pfaff now is and wonder what he might become.

    Ya' feel me?
  •
  • Dualitypro 3 months ago
I feel you, I just think the majority of the professional industry disagrees with you. And to be fair, I've only worked in the LA market, maybe this will do really well in other places. If he were in Joburg, what would you hire him for? What is it that he will bring to the table to you right now? Skills can be taught, but with the industry the way it is and veteran artists struggling for work, why would I bother to train a guy with no clear visible skills or direction when I can hire compositors that just finished 2012 (which I did)?

    Duality,
I'd meet with him and I'd FIND something for him to do with us. Maybe some writing, maybe some wonderfully naive animation, maybe some art work, maybe just have him come on set, hang out with us and learn a few skills to help him polish his own.
In just the same way as I mentor film school students and emerging talents.
Or maybe I'd find something he wants to do and find a way to help him do it.
Why, because I see POTENTIAL. And that is far far more interesting than technical proficiency or even technical skill. Those things can always be bought and are easy enough to find.
Something that 'speaks to me', that makes me laugh, that GETS MY ATTENTION is far, far more rare.
Remember, the best musicians in the world are session musicians you never heard of. The most successful ones are the ones that have that extra something, that spark of genius, 'the fire that lights itself'.
The point is, as the reel suggests, he's young and does a variety of things. A generalist if you will.
Now, your experience may suggest that only specialist work and this work is not up to your standard in whatever specific niche you fill.
But my experience suggests that generalist work LOTS - folks CREATE work for generalists if they like the person, of think they have something to offer. In MY experience this happens all the time in fact.
Not perhaps in the niche that you fill, but it's a big world, and there's lots more going on out there than you seem to suggest.
Sure, this reel dos not say polish and technical excellence - at least not yet - but we all start somewhere, and the point of a reel like this is to suggest something far more valuable POTENTIAL.
Now, I'm not going to be arrogant enough to suggest I am able to speak for the majority of the industry, just for the small corner of it that I have inhabited these past two decades.
But I will speak for my corner with at least some confidence and say this reel works FOR ME and for the kind of people that I work with. As evidenced from the positive responses I have received about it from the professional people I have sent it to.

This middle aged lady, for instance, runs a very successful company doing educational work in schools:
    "That dude KICKS M*TH*RF*CK*N’ ASS!!"

Now, obviously, that's somewhat self fulfilling as - almost by definition - people who work with me are gonna share at least some sensibilities with me.

But, ultimately, that is my POINT. Any reel - either seriously focused and technically polished, or rather off the wall and merely hinting at potential - serves as a Filter. It helps people to find those of like mind.

Now, the fact that you, and those in your corner of the world, do not think of it works filters you and your corner out. But to suggest that by filtering you and your corner out also suggests filtering out the majority of the industry is - not to put too fine a point on it - a bit presumptuous.

After all, we are all looking for something different, and they very lack of plished skills that is the yardstick by which you pass judgement may actually be a positive in someone else.

After all, if it were not Southpark, how do you think people would judge THAT show on a purely 'technical' basis?

Perfectly fine for you to say YOU don't like it.
Perfectly fine to say you don't think the kind of folks YOU work with won't like it.
But to presume speak for the majority.
To say that you'll eat your keyboard if this gets him ANY work.
Well, let's just say I hope for his sake and for yours that your keyboard is made of chocolate.
