61. 5DMK2 Music Video - Sleep Alive - Put It On My Tab
5 months ago
I had a few bad pixels on the 5dmk2 sensor and I wrote a blog about it. Canon will fix the problem under warranty.

This is my first attempt at shooting a music video. I did not see the storyboards or visit the shooting locations until the day of the shoot. The entire thing was shot within two blocks of the Worcester Union Train Station (Massachusetts) in 8 hours. I was planning on using the Sony PMW-EX1 and the Letus Ultimate, but I am glad I brought a second camera with me after the sun went down.

I decided to use the Canon 5Dmk2 DSLR camera because the director, Torey Champagne, wanted this shot in available light and with very shallow depth of field. I found it a challenge because “available light” in certain locations really meant, “no light”. I come from a television camera background where the biggest image sensor is 2/3 of an inch. It would be ridiculous to add 18dB gain into a television camera and expect usable results, but this camera is different. The Canon 5dmk2 sensor is much larger, that of a 35mm digital cinema camera. People across the internet are pushing the low light capabilities with this rig, so what the hell. Maybe it would be possible just to shoot it guerrilla style like this, after all, we were going for a grungy music video look.

Instead of me using my better judgment and telling Torey that it would be impossible to shoot in these locations without the help of a one ton grip truck and several people, I decided to take the Canon 5dmk2 and shoot at the dreaded ISO 6400. Not all the shots were at this nutty super high gain setting, just some of them. At this insane level of video amplification, I found noise and a bunch of dead pixels reared their ugly red eyes. In fact, whilst shooting at 6400 with a Nikon 55mm f1.2 prime lens, I said to one of the band members, “this is like shooting night vision!”

I used the Glidecam to shoot all the city shots with the band members/actress. I found pulling focus impossible to do whilst shooting so I just keep a specific distance between the film plane and the subject as I tracked them with the Glidecam. You will only find a couple focus pulls in this video. I later (or earlier in the morning) used Vinten tripods and my home made PVC dolly system during the music performance inside Union Station.

Take a moment for the video to load below and see for yourself. This camera is changing the way I look at a shoot location. It was simply amazing that the camera was even able to make exposure with little noise at the top of an dark parking garage or empty city alley without additional lighting.

The Worcester Massachusetts band is called, “Sleep Alive” and this track is titled, “Put it on my tab”. Torey Champagne directed and edited the video. This video is copyright Torey Champagne Productions.

You coulda told me you shot a iso 100 with a bunch of lights. To which I would have responded " yeah, I can tell !". Looks great Tom. The look suits the video. Such a flexible cam. Love it.

Very nicely shot. DSLRs are definitely a threat to HD video when it comes to shooting on the cheap.

$2700 for just the 5dmk2 camera body. the image sensor is as big as the RED ONE. wow.
  • Mark Holmes plus 4 months ago
Actually the 5Ds sensor is quite a bit larger than the RED 1 sensor...

How long can you shoot without the camera getting super hot?

Nice one man, what lens did you used for those wide shots at the train station?

To bad this camera comes with 30fps, here in europe we need to convert everything into 25fps, which causes some (very little) motion artefects ( fast movements can blur etc..)

    Cheers!

i know the 5d mark II is amazing especially now with the full manual control. in video the broadcast 20,000+ broadcast cams had only 2/3 sensors which even kind of suck in low light plus usually their only sd and 2/3 sensors dont have the shallowest dof. With the 5d mark II you get unbelievable low light, its as good as the human eye with a 1.2 lens and putting up the iso. On my 2 1/3 inch cams that i have the xl1s and the hfs100 (best hd indie cam for the price) its really hard to put the gain up and getting very clean results. But btw you wouldnt know the iso equivalent for gain in other words what is 18db gain in iso terms.

Rolling shutter nastiness makes this nearly unwatchable. Ouch, the skew and wobble! And just who is that nasty-looking woman with the tattooed arm? She gave me a fright! ;-)

@mayer chalom, please do not confuse a cheap sub-$2,000 DSLR with a $40-$60,000 pro video camcorder. You want 2/3-inch pro video, you have to pay for it, big time. You are only trying to record a 1MP or at best, 2.2MP image, so doing that with a camera that has 18, 20, 21, 22, etc megapixel sensor is plain crazy.

Also, pls do not confuse sub-$1,000 consumer camcorders with $40-60,000 pro video camcorders. They have nothing in common.

Is it me or are you trying to have the same argument on 10 different vimeo videos? :)

Yeah I now, use a Pana varicam!

Hey Tom is the higlight clipping done in post or did you use HTP in camera? Funny I had a dead pixel show up as well at iso 6400 on my Nikon 55 F1.2, but not on other lenses!
