Every One's Battle _ hfg130227
ICE-BREAKER: if you could replace any one thing you own, what would it be and why??
Covetousness is EVERY man, woman, boy, & girl's battle!!
For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Webster's Dictionary ~ A craving for possession.
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law:for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
One of 10 Original Commandments given to Moses for Israel ~
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not COVET; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
DETAIL given in Exodus 20:17
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Led to original sin:
1) Desiring the FORBIDDEN
>Adam & Eve had EVERYTHING in the world, except for ONE thing!
Hell and destruction are never full;
so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
2) Desiring ANOTHER'S
>jealousy, envy, greed.
Moses chose Ldrs who FEARED God, men of TRUTH, HATED covetousness Exodus 18:21 (covetousness will lead to untruthful ness)
3) DISCONTENT with what's yours
>dissing the content (ungrateful ness)
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have:for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Destination disease (if only lived there - house, neighborhood, city, state) what ever state be content
Someone else disease (if only were; if only married to)
Backslider blues (if only hasn't done that)
Can't go back & make new start - make new end)
Love not THINGS in the world...
1 John 2:15-17
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Covetousness causes one to SOW SPARINGLY
2 Corinthians 9:5-8
Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.
But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity:for God loveth a cheerful giver.
And GOD is ABLE to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always HAVING all SUFFICIENCY in all THINGS, may ABOUND to every good WORK:
LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS!!!!
Covetousness = idolatry (Col 3:5)
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
1 Timothy 6:6
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Tim 6:7-11 (oh thank heaven for 7-11)
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
For the love of money is the root of all evil:which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
But thou, O man of God, FLEE these things; and FOLLOW after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. (Flight or fight; flee or follow)
O SATISFY us early with thy MERCY;
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
1) Describe an example how you have battled COVETOUSNESS in the past.
2) What was the key to OVERCOMING Covetousness??
3) What is your CURRENT battle with COVETOUSNESS ??
4) What more can/will YOU do to CONQUER COVETOUSNESS???
Remember rich young ruler:
When keeping commandments cited, covetousness was not mentioned. This was his battle...
My prayer, "Lord let me become so addicted to giving that I destroy covetousness all the days of my life."
