Colonial church in Belleville in need of repairs. Reporter: Rick Holmes. Photographer/Editor: Will Caldwell. BELLEVILLE - A church in Belleville built before the Revolutionary War is in need of $50,000 in repairs due to damaged suffered during Superstorm Sandy.
"La Senda en Antigua" Christian Pentacostal Church, founded in 1697, suffered flooding damage after Hurricane Irene battered the area in 2011 and major steeple damage after Sandy.
Pastor Mike Ortiz, who bought the church just two years ago, says the steeple was close to collapsing during the storm's tremendous wind gusts.
Though his congregation only has 60 members, Ortiz says that he will remain on a mission to have the church repaired.
The cemetery behind the church is the final resting place for 66 Revolutionary War veterans. The pastor hopes renovations on the steeple will begin early in the spring.
