Hi Joe. Thanks for posting. I actually live across the street from you... although I think it's time I move.

Looks like the circus to me. Leaux - good luck on your move out of Chicago or any major big city for that matter.

Nice work, camera in one hand, latte in the other, sweet!

I bet you feel like quite the idiot now. High taxes, handgun ban, and a short staffed CPD.

Mayor Shortshanks and the corrupt real estate developers are laughing all the way to the bank. What's that sound I hear? Oh, that's your property values in free fall.

    BOHICA Suckaz!

It's not spilling my latte or property values I worry about. I worry about the hard-working families who were trying to cross the street at 9:10 PM when they had to take cover from a hail of glass bottles; the kids who were returning from playing ball in Arai park when they witnessed this; the couples who were out enjoying the great weather that evening and had to turn back. Not to mention the people who had to flee the bullets that were fired the following night. This is what I care about. I care about the welfare of the people around me. And you should too.

Thanks for posting this, Joe. Hopefully this will focus some attention on a real problem.

Uptown has been like that since the early 80s - crime ridden. Same thing. Stay safe people.

Damn... you guys think that it is a problem and a problematic NEIGHBORHOOD? Come a couple of months to Argentina. Here, these guys are babies (they are actually).... If the police arrive, they get kicked too...

All I know is that I should be able to walk outside without getting hit in the head with a glass bottle... or anything for that matter.

Gah, some people are just dumb-asses.

I moved out of that area about 10 years ago. Videotaping is not going to do a damn thing to clean up that ghetto. I lived in both Uptown and Rogers Park and would actually call the cops every night and give the password they were using at the drug house across the street EVERY NIGHT. Nothing was ever done. At the CAPS meetings they would tell us "what are we going to do, take them home? Their parents have longer rap sheets that they do." Also, you know "their" civil rights might be imposed on if the cops stop them. What I found interesting in your videos is the cops made the 2 drunks clean up the garbage yet I didn't see any of the thugs getting arrested for the riot.

Send this to the Olympic Committee and every news station you can, both Chicago and national and show them what Daley's budget cuts have done to our neighborhoods - 1 lonely squad car responded and then finally got back-up 1 more car!!!!!

Keep it up - good work, but I think you should be sending these out to news organizations.

Thanks, Kathleen. Fox, CBS, NBC, and ABC have all done stories using my footage.

Thanks for your video! Pls keep us--uptown residents-- updated w/ ur videos. I take the 151 bus in that corner. Now I'll find a way to avoid the area at 9 pm..?

Meawhile, I'll check now Alderman Schiller's website if she has addressed this issue.

Wonderful coverage on the news tonight Joe. Fox even has you running against the Alderman there. Just let my know if you decide to run! I have your back.

I guess these low life thugs didn't get the memo that it is hard to "riot" properly while holding up one's pants.

I've been an Uptown resident for 5 years. The video scared me. When I saw it in NBC, I never imagined it would be in my area; But when it identified the location, I almost fell from my chair. I live 2 blocks from this mayhem.

Alderman Schiller, you managed to avoid irate (bec they were frustrated) residents yesterday fr the 2016 Olympics community meeting at Truman. But you need to address this issue anyway. Local news repeat the story they picked up fr yesterday's event every hour the following day. It clearly puts you not in a good light. It says you were in vacation but you were in contact w/ your staff. Fine. But now that you are back, what has been done? Were those gang bangers arrested from the disturbance they caused?

Estimated 20-30 gang members seen in Uptown riot video tells a lot about the peace & safety in the neighborhood. I should point out though that I don't know what gangs do but I'm still afraid to be around them.

Roy, I guarantee nothing is going to be done about this. I live a bit north, up by Senn High School, and this same scenario was going on virtually every day at 1pm when summer school let out, up until a few weeks ago. The cops were there almost every day during the mayhem. Not once did they arrest, detain or even single out one person and address what they were doing. They would either just yell to the kids to "go home" or stay in their cars and drive toward the kids, scattering them all over the neighborhood. I think the cops are just as afraid of these degenerates as the residents of these neighborhoods.

Joe, you say that you care about the welfare of everyone in your neighborhood, yet on your blog, you let comments such as the following go unchecked:

"Just wait until Wilson Yard is full of gangbangers... if you think it is bad now...."

"Take a look at the number of low income, very low income, and extremely low income housing projects there are in a one block radius. Do you think a single one of those involved in the riot went home to unsubsidized housing?"

I guess you don't consider lower-income people part of your neighborhood, since you are letting them be collectively blamed for those events.
  • Joe Gray plus 2 years ago
    Rimaye:

You make a good point. Remarks like those you reference are not part of the solution. We all want to be safe in Uptown, regardless of socioeconomic status. And that's exactly what I heard loud and clear at the CAPS Beat 2312 meeting tonight.

Thanks for your note. Perhaps it would be better to remove comments from this page so that they can exist in a more public forum.

    Regards,
    Joe

That is Sheridan and Leland. As bad as it looks, I have to agree with Chicago Police as it does not look gang related. I did not see anyone throwing up gang handsigns, or yelling: example: "king Love" or "Disciple Love".

It is funny how Uptown eliminated the street gang - Gaylords - at the Sunnyside and Magnolia Mall only to replace the gang activity with this mess.
