This is a video of one aspect of my alternate energy research.
I needed a test bed for a mobile application so I decided to use a lawn tractor. As usual, I spent a lot of time gutting it - mower deck, gas engine, battery, fuel system, wiring, etc. All I needed was a rolling chassis and a transmission to check gear ratios. Unfortunately, it wasn't 'rolling' and the transmission was cooked, HA! Well… dang it… I got it rolling, rebuilt the transmission, and converted it anyway!
It was a lot of fun along the way, and I got to drag my underestimating friends around when they tried to hold it back:) The controls were very interesting. Probably too much to cover it all here, but the accelerator is piloted by a micro-regulator so the motor changes pressures to match loads, versus just changing the flow (volume). I also put a utility port (a standard, quick-release air coupling) inline so that I could use Lawn TractAir for many other purposes, including as a remote tank for air tools. I can also plug in my air gun (vimeo.com/lglb/pneugun) for quick mobile assaults whenever I feel like going 'off the reservation', HA!
P.S. - the transmission has way too many gears and jack shafts, so THAT'S where all the whining noises come from. Normally, you can't hear your lawn tractor's transmission whining over a loud gas engine, plus I'm also running it about twice as fast as it was designed to run!
