These two short films feature my mother, Judy Phinney, her family and friends in 1938 and 1939. The photographer, we believe, was her mother Gladys Phinney - although Gladys appears in several scenes. The events are typical "home movie" fare - Christmas, birthday and scenes outside the house.
The films are of remarkably good quality and were shot between early Spring 1938 and early Spring 1939 in Wakefield, MA. The original 16mm films were silent and recorded at 18 frames per second. They are played back here at 24 frames per second creating a slightly speeded up look. The music was added recently. Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump" and Tommy Dorsey's "Dipsey Doodle" were both popular tunes of that time.
