If you're new to the project, you can catch up here hi.projectpedal.com

64 days was the exact length of Pedal's production, the number of days we were out on the road. It feels really exciting to be releasing episodes again, I've been editing and filming the last few nights till 5 in the morning, and although it's been hell on my cold, I've had a blast doing it.

I'm anxious to get started on part 2 - when Amanda and I originally began writing the production related episodes, we were expecting to fit everything into 3 cuts. But that doesn't look to be the case any longer - we're finding we have a lot more to say, and many different layers of the whole experience to cover.

We'd love to hear your feedback - it will help greatly in deciding what questions to answer in what order. Thanks for watching.

Awesome! I can't believe how good that looks, Mike. I can't wait to see the rest!

Thanks Dan! :) You know, I've thought many times about how exciting it will be for me to someday watch a film at the Moxie - having watched you build it from nothing.

I hope someday the project does well enough to earn a screening at your theater :) A guy can dream, right?

great film! what did you use to shoot this with? that's a lot of tapes! always did love closeups of typewriters...
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks :) The film was shot with a Z1u and an FX1 that had an HDV35 kit on it (you could use SLR lens), plus a handful of 16mm and a ton of Mp4 footage (the crew had two little cameras and Larry had one also)...

I watched this during my lunch today.

It was one of the most engaging, interesting, and memory provoking pieces of content I've consumed in a while.

Being the first episode I'd seen, I didn't quite know what was going on, but I think was a good thing. This video stands on it's own.

The idea of narrating old, candid videos with the characters thoughts was fantastic. I can't recall anywhere else that's done it so effectively.

    I'm your newest fan.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Patrick... I'm speechless - thanks for watching, thanks for taking the time to write something like this, thanks for saying your a fan.

you know how one of your catch phrases is saying "that's.... (long pause) awesome!" yes mike. yes it is awesome. this can't possibly be anything less than beautifully brilliant when you're done. it will be worth all the sleepless nights. im proud of you. <3 eric.

Eric!!! I don't know what to say :) you're a hard man to please... that sounds kinda dirty, ha. But... if you liked this - then I must be doing something write. I mean it... I'm really, really happy that you said this. I'm flattered. You know I think you're brilliant.
  • afaultychromosome. 2 years ago
i certainly would not just say it to be nice either! there are several beautiful shots (and they dont look like shitty dv cam!), and what you say is - dare i say - moving (maybe its just that i happen to feel the exact same way right now about mundane routine and isolation and the desire to break out and explore). !!!

I've had a really good time watching this. Pictures are just so great. At the beginning, my mouth staid (like stay in the past, not sure) because I was so concentrated on the beautiful pictures. And I love the narration, smooth voice. As other, I'm a new fan too. I'm not sure I get all the words and all but it's really a good feeling to watch it.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thank you :) Although I don't know if I'd describe my voice as "smooth", ha ha - it's kind of a frustrating voice to have in "real" life... it doesn't care and people have a hard time hearing me.

I'm really glad you liked it though - thanks for commenting!

    Amazing.

I'm so touched and curious... and I too have watched this episode out of context so I have no idea what is going on. But, you've caught hold of me with your thoughtful tone and beautiful, beautiful images.

I guess it's time I catch myself up. I so look forward to what comes next.

I'm also curious about the Maine connection...
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Emily :) I can't tell you enough what it means to me - to have worked so long on something... something I wasn't even sure people would care to see - and then to read comments like yours. I'm... overwhelmed.

I hope you enjoy the other episodes. And the Maine connection is simply where the trip ended :) we started in Anacortes, WA and ended in Bar Harbor 64 days later.

well done, well photographed, well edited. My only question would be (and I havn't seen the other episodes yet so I hope I'm not being unfair) why is the tone soo dramatic? It is a massive achievement and everything. But I dont understand why soo heavy? Didn't everyone do it for fun and to achieve something? I know it must have been (and still will be) hard work but...
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Mat :) I would say the tone has much to do with this project has, so far, taken up 4-5 years of Amanda and I's lives... and we've put *a lot* into it. And that kind of effort, that kind of commitment to a project that is done purely out of a want to share a story, becomes a "heavy" part of your life :)

Especially after the filming has been done - and it's time to tell the story, it's a heavy load sometimes - I don't want the last 5 years of work to just sputter out.

There were many parts of the trip that were fun... there were many parts that were impossible... we laughed, cried, bled, screamed, and somehow managed to make it till the end. *shrug* Hope that makes more sense.
  • mat flemo 2 years ago
Looking at the other episodes and stuff I realize this is a "making of" so i guess it's OK that it's focused on yourselves and the grief of getting though such a project. I hope when you make the finished film it does justice to high points too. It comes across that your perfectionist so don't worry it's going to be be great Nice one :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Hey Mat :) thanks for watching the other episodes, yes, the website and these episodes are all a making-of. The film, which we haven't announced the name yet, will be different, and specifically about the trip, and have nothing to do with us at all.

I hope you're right about it being great... I'll settle for decent :)

Very interesting, I love how you captured life. The lighting, music, the moods fit perfectly, yet, I'm confused? What is your objective by the making of these movies? Also, there seems to be parts when the music gets overly loud then stops to nothing. Was that intended? I almost stopped watching thinking the tap was messing up. But hey, you inspire me because documentaries is what I'm learning to do, about people and life, upclose and personal revealing a fact about life that many never quite get.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Hey Patty :) Thanks for watching - and for the compliments. Our objective of making these episodes is to attract an audience to our project, and also, the 64 days series is a personal look at the making of for our film. So this is part 1 of several.

The parts where the sound becomes very high and then abruptly stops *is* intentional. We're realizing that the silent idea might not work so well on a computer, too many people think something is wrong :P

But thanks again - if you have time, you should check out some of the earlier episodes to get a better sense of what these episodes are about :)

Nice start Mike, this is going to be great. Thanks for putting your *** on the line for your passion. 64 Days is going to be great. Nice narration track and certain scenes were really done well for a documentary back story to your feature.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks :) I have to say, it's been both hard and a lot of fun to put a bit more work into the making-of than people usually do. It will be interesting for us, after we finish the film, to see which people like more: 64 Days, or the film itself :P

  • innomind 2 years ago
What is your weapon of choice to shoot these spectacular images?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
We used a Z1u (for the wides mostly) and a Fx1 with an HDV35 kit, which let us use a collection of SLR lens we had with us.

The kit we used can be seen here: sgpro.co.uk/
  • innomind 2 years ago
I like the way the image looks in dark situations, especially in the scene where the character is sitting and typing with his back to the cam. That must have been Z1. Is it really 0lux cam?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks - that was just me trying to hide how un-cool and dirty my room looks in the light ;)

Yea, the Fx1 was the crew's (who live in Belgium), and the Z1u is mine, so all the "present" stuff was filmed with that.

Okay, I tried to figure out what a 0lux cam was, so I could sound smart :P but I don't know what that is :) what do you mean by that?
  • innomind 2 years ago
The less the number of LUX the better the camcorder performs in darkness. I know that HD camcorders are usually not that good at handling dark scenes compared to SD camcorders like the all-time "night-shooter" SONY PD170, which has 0LUX, I think... That is why I was surprised by that scene. What I wonder is why can't the camcorder makers recycle the censor technology from PD170 to HD camcoders. They always waste R&D money on reinventing the wheel every time a new camcorder comes out.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Ahh yes :) right. Yea, I know someone who had (I think it broke in New Orleans) the PD170, they said it was great in low-light.

The Z1u does alright - gets enough that I can play with in Final Cut. Not that I know much about that :P but.. I get by :)

wow. wonderful. i want an HD camera so bad.

the textures were great, esp the type writer and the papers gently fluttering.

    Wow... 4 times - I'm flattered - I really, really flattered actually.

I'll have to look more into Film4, I don't know much about it. I guess I never thought about the credits being anything special :) fading to black just felt awkward...

As for the negative energy - it's very, very intentional ;) I'd actually be pretty down on myself if no one picked up on it. And it's there for... some very good reasons - which we haven't dealt with yet.

This episode starts, like it mentions, 6 months after we finished our trip - and "negative" energy is how I felt and then some.

I love filmmaking - and the reasons I felt the way I did have nothing to do with that :)

The episodes will get a little more positive very soon... and then they'll get a lot more negative :P

    Thanks for the great comment!
  • amanda walker 2 years ago
this episode is mike explaining how he felt at a certain time about the way certain things went down, it IS NOT how he feels currently. he is incredibly happy to be working on this project and having a great time doing so, and also very, very appreciative of every comment and encouraging word.
i too believe that once our film is complete we will have "a masterpiece that is worthy of an art-house cinema release!" but these episodes are a behind-the-scenes look at the making-of our film, nothing more. they are very personal, and the tone we tried to convey in this episode was how mike felt once we returned from filming and the troubles he was having getting back into the swing of writing. and i must stress, the production trip last summer we spent filming was extremely hard on our personal relationship for reasons we haven't gotten into yet. hopefully once our 64 days series is complete, this will make more sense to everyone.

ps - i get into this topic a bit here: tinyurl.com/6xfumv
  • amanda walker 2 years ago
also, i have to say that i think making this episode was very therapeutic for mike, it was a way for him to deal with how he was feeling, get it out and move on. fresh and new. it was good. it really was a ton of fun to make for both of us and it got us rolling after some hard times. :)
