Music for violin and gamelan performed by violinist Stephanie Arado and the Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble from a concert titled "In the Garden of the Gamelan" at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, MN on February 24, 2013. Harrison wrote this piece as part of his incidental music for a production of Faust (not an opera) in Santa Cruz in 1985. In 1987 he revised and renamed it. A student of Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, and a champion of Charles Ives and Alan Hovhaness, much of Harrison's work is twelve tonalist and dissonant, but his interest in gamelan led him back to more lyrical, melodious music, such as this piece. Together with his partner, Bill Colvig, Harrison constructed several modern gamelan sets using unusual materials, such as tin cans and aluminum tubing.
