Abduction. Assault. Snatch theft.
Crime at shopping mall car parks in Malaysia are on the rise. Many of these incidents could have been avoided, if people paid more attention to their surroundings.
So how do we keep shoppers on the alert while making way to their cars?
Our answer: Heighten their senses by creating the element of suspense. The ‘Be Alert, Be Safe’ Experiment.
The Experiment took place in Publika, a popular mall in Kuala Lumpur (and previously, car park crime scene). With appropriate music/sound design played via surround speakers, and light effects to set the scene, we jolted mall-goers from leisurely state to full alert; which in turn sped up the pace to their cars.
As a result:
In September 2012, the mall saw a 40% increase in security escort requests.
90% of retailers pledged their support to the experiment.
No reported incidences in Publika's car park, to date.
