I shot this to test the video on my new Canon 5d mark II. I wanted to get familiar with the camera and with the post process.

Things I learned
-shooting hand held with a DSLR was actually easier than I thought it would be - not ideal, but not a total headache.
-the image is better than I anticipated
-the post process, especially if you want to go to 24p, takes a lot longer than I anticipated. If I did color correction it would have taken even longer.

Very nice! I've been nervous about the challenge of controlling manual focus during shooting while trying to hold a (comparatively) small camera steady. But it seems as if you've gotten the hang of it.

And YES! She is a cutie!

The 5d is a pretty heavy camera which in this case helps. Plus the focus ring on the lens I was using is pretty sweet which makes finding focus rather easy.

Hey Nathan, having used this camera now for a while with video, I've learned having a follow focus is a must and even though post can be a pain, I don't convert to 24p till the very end, I edit at 30fps in FCP.

I'm assuming this is your baby girl... very cute and congrats.

So given that I assume you hold the camera with your right hand, do you use a shoulder mount to free up your left hand to use the follow focus.
I did some testing and thought I could get pretty good results with a rigged up rail system that basically was two rails with a cross beam that made contact with me in my upper chest. This gave me 3 points of contact (two hands and the chest.) I tried the FF, but I thought that the fine motor skills it took to use it meant that I couldn't use that hand to support the camera.

I have some modified configurations based on the RedRock setups for DSLRs. We did some video podcasts while we were down there and you can see come images and video of my setup: athentikos.com/wordpress/

I have one setup for just hand held, tripod and Glidecam. I have another setup for shoulder mounting. Each one can be modified based on the situation. But basically it all allows be to be able to shoot and work the FF all on my own. You can even use the FF as a point of support as well.

You can't trade in a Nikon for a child :)
I have been really enjoying it - although only as a b-camera, not as my main cam. Plus the stills are a major upgrade from my D200
