1. A Record Of Life
A short animation loosely based on the scientific recording of life's great species. And how this has given us clues that piece together, for us to discover the secrets of the evolution and diversity of life on Earth.

Great job on the music for your own animation. Nice to see an artist take the reigns in more than just one aspect of his work! The animation is superb, also. Ithas that wonderful sketchbook quality. Great job.

It's very nice yes, but what that a whale and a manatee in the underwater part in the beginning? :/ Mammals didn't evolve until after life went from sea to land... You guys could have done more research - otherwise isn't it just kinda wank? ::: prepares to be pelted with hatred :::
  • Yeah you're quite right Kirby, but we decided to use our 'artistic license'. We set out knowing that we could never make it completely scientifically and chronologically accurate. We wanted the animation to be visually stimulating first and foremost, unfortunately whales are just awesome creatures so they had to go in the sea bit, and that's one of my favourite bits, so I don't regret doing it. Thanks for your constructive words, although I'm quite proud of what we managed to create, and I know it's got its flaws, but would hope others didn't think it was wank because of that.

    Sirs,
Obviously I didn't craft my comments with the same amount of effort that you put into making the film but that's part of putting your work on the world stage, no? I agreed that it was a nice film; is was well executed and showed off your talent and hard work.
I still stand by what I meant, if not how I said it, about letting art get in the way of an accurate depiction of commonly agreed upon theories of natural history.
An accurate depiction is perhaps not what you set out to do - but perhaps it would have been more challenging, no? There is something to be said about artistic license when it is used to make a point - whereas, I suppose there is something not as pleasant to be said when it is used to be lazy about facts.
    Cheers kids,
    Kirby
  • yeah I can see your point. Going back to the whale bit though, we wanted the animation to flow seemlessly through different scenes, which meant that putting the species we used, in the order of they evolved, sometimes not possible. The piece is more supposed to suggest the idea of evolution, as opposed to having everything perfectly ordered. We weren't being lazy, we just decided that that would work best for what we wanted. Otherwise we would have had to skip back and forth with each species, ruining the flowing effect.
    Thanks,

    Owen

    This is great.
I love how, besides the beautiful artwork and music, the concept is intellectually stimulating. I also like how human cultural analysis is superimposed on everything - to me it has a significant meaning.

    More please! :D
