Could you share how do you focus with a steadicam? Is it full auto, is it manual to infinity, is it small aperture and fully wide lens, or do you in fact control focus while working the steadicam?
  • stillmotion plus 3 months ago
generally for a steadicam shot we are stopping down to get a deeper depth of field that allows for the movement you want in the shot. that can mean up to f8 for some shots. if your shooting with something like a 24 f1.4 lens, by looking at the focus markings on the lens you can see that it focuses from about 10' at its furthest point, and then infinity. that means that everything great than 10' away would be in focus if you set the lens to infinity - so that is one way to get sharp shots with movement - keep your subject further away and use a wide lens. the wider the lens, the shorter that minimum distance becomes. if you need to do a shot that requires them to be closer, shooting at f8 with a wider lens, such as a 24 gives you enough dof to let your subject more slightly closer or further away, to change subjects, and to be more spontaneous with your shots. we never change focus in mid shot, just adjust for that specific shot with both focus and aperture, but understanding your lens and dof is huge.

Hey guys really perfect sound! what system/ type of mic you used? what about the wind??
  • stillmotion plus 3 months ago
we used two setups for sound // the mkh416 on a boom pole as well as the sennheiser ewg2 under their clothes with rycote undercovers. both were running into zoom h4ns. for wind we did a couple things; fuzzy windscreens on the shotgun, lav mics under clothes with undercovers, and using the low filter cut off in the zoom h4n.

to be honest, we were shocked with how good it sounded.

how do you make your guys in front of the camera look like they where talking to good old friends? often i experienced that talking while camera is rolling sounds "affected"...
  • stillmotion plus 3 months ago
i think that is with the whole experience we create, the connections we form, and how we get to know our couples before w do any shooting. everybody we work with really feels like good ol' friends, so i am glad that comes through. good interviewing is certainly a talent just like shooting or editing and can make a world of a difference in the final piece i think.
