More than 200 million people live in Brazil and of that number a startling amount can not read to an advanced level. Although illiteracy rates have been going down -today only 6 % of Brazilians are considered illiterate - this is still significantly higher than most developed countries and many who do learn to read and write do so at rudimentary levels. Frighteningly, only 62% of Brazilians who finish university and 35% who finish high school are fully literate.
EMC is dedicated to improving these statistics and is partnering with the "AlfaSol Solidarity in Literacy" program to provide reading and writing education to students of all ages. Besides fully funding the course, EMC supplies eyeglasses to vision-impaired students encouraging even the most socioeconomically disadvantaged to enroll... and EMC employees participate in teaching and mentoring the students.
