We were testing the hd video capabilities of the Canon EOS 5d Mark II and made this video. Primary things to test were the rolling shutter effect and how it affects fast paced shooting with small fight choreographys, how the avchd can be color corrected and edited and also some small tracking and effects shot testing. Still learning particles and after effects. A couple of shots done with the canon hv20 and Sony hc1 camera. 30p is a bitch.

Setting for this video is an apocalyptic Finland and we went for a slight 80's action movie style :) You can find a 1080p version from our webpage at hmcindie.com

Pretty awesome! The results from the 5D MkII are pretty impressive visually. Very very clear.

Also, nice use of the Mass Effect music. ;)

    haaha, that was awesome !

    1. Good to see Von Dutch is still in business
    2. Great choreography.. Wasn't expecting the "hero" to be so poised after stating he knows Karate.
    3. Solid color grading, had an authentic feel.
    4. Very Van Damme-esque

    All this for a test??

If you don't test the workflow then you're not really testing it. To see the effect the rolling shutter has we had to do some small action and stabilization shots. To test out the 30p avchd workflow we had to do effects and we also had to test how it mixes with two other cameras shooting at 50i. Color grading had to be tested too so we could see how much blacks is possible to get back etc etc. So yes. All this for a test.

Ok, I just viewed this after your latest vid. Firstly, what do you prefer *right now*, 7d or 5dmkii?
Secondly, its too damned good! But excellent work, and just shows you can make cool stuff with limited resources (and friends that know K A R A T E ) :)

Sizemore: Yah, thanks. I don't have a preference between them yet. 5d is better in lowlight + full frame. 7d has a 720p mode (with lots of aliasing though). I think it doesn't really matter anymore, we just need a good story and production.

Very true. I know a lot of people feel like selling their 5Ds and 7Ds now the 1D MkIV is coming, but I think its easy to get lost in the "I must have the latest technology" mindset (saying that, the 1D looks nice :) ).

Great stuff! What was the shutter speed setting for the 5D? I'm hoping when I purchas one, that I wont get too much of that motion smear by setting the shutter correctly. Your vid looks great! thanks!
