Beauty Unadorned

Friedrich Schiller once said, “Grace is the beauty of form under the influence of freedom”. He truly believed that when a person is completely drenched with freedom that they express their true character, and within this, their grace and beauty start to emerge in a pure and inadvertent form. I, too, believe the same, and that is why I have created a short film called “Beauty Unadorned” to focus on capturing the truest beauty-a beauty that is not skin deep. Whether it be the aspect of a person stroking their hair away from their face, to the way they blink or move their lips when they talk, to the kindness and purity found within them that is usually not categorized as an element of “beauty”, the motive of this film is to open the eyes of vulnerable human beings who feel the need to cease existing.

I chose “beauty” as an object/activity that is usually overlooked in the reason being that most of society’s perspective of a beautiful person has been influenced by the media. This makes it an object because the true meaning of beauty is lost, due to the media’s constant outburst of women having to look a certain way to be considered “beautiful”. Nowadays society’s high-standards have made it difficult for the insecure to even look at themselves in the mirror.

A woman does not have to be beautiful because she’s wearing a mask of make up, and a man does not have to be handsome because he has on an expensive watch. It’s the simplest things like a woman’s dimples that make her beautiful the way she is, or a man’s crooked smile that makes him unique. We all overlook beauty and our perception of beauty is in the obvious; the exterior of one's looks.

The story falls around a young girl who is very graceful, but she isn't aware of it. She is a lost soul and her daily routine evolves around her loneliness and depression because she sees herself as someone unattractive, someone unfit in this world. Everyday she wakes up to the beams of the sun, monotonously doing her daily routine and when she eventually looks at herself in the mirror, she starts to feel a drench of sadness within her. Every day of the week she feels this, until one day she breaks out of her rotting shell and decide to end it all, leaving the world with no hope and faith, and staining the world with her beautiful death. She’s finally free, and it is upsetting that only until then, her beauty is recognized and she is noticed for the first time.

The same repetitive things we do in our daily lives have become a routine and I want to look for beauty in the simplest things. I want people to see that the human body is an art, and the creation of beauty is art. There isn’t a need to add an ornament to the human body to make it beautiful. A beauty unadorned is the most honest and most pure form of beauty.
