This is an effect I've been wanting to try for a while. It's when the footage is slowed down to half speed but matches up with the audio perfectly. I've seen this technique done in a lot of music videos & I'm sure you all have too. It's a subtle effect but very cool.

Diced up in Final Cut / Depth of field and color correction in After effects. Final Render done in After effects.

yeah thats good i love it!! how did u get it close to being insinc?
  • You simply speed up the music and have your actor sing to that sped up version. Then after your filming, bring the song back to normal speed, but slo down your footage. Voila!

Very nice; Looks like a professional video!

It's also fun to do this in the other direction: slow down the song extremely, record your lipsync and then speed up the video again – the lips are in sync, but the movement looks so freaking unnaturally (of course this does not fit all styles of music ... :)
  • haha...interesting. I'll look into it. :)

This is pretty sweet. My brother in-law was telling me this was what they did in videos before but I thought it would be to hard to look good singing at 2x. It looks great.
  • Yea I don't know if there's a specific name for the technique but I've always loved the way it looked.

Just curious how did you speed up the song? lol Looks awesome though!!
  • I sped it up using Final Cut Express HD. All I did was drag the audio clip into the timeline then use the shortcut "apple J" to bring up the speed function. Then just speed or slow down however much you want. If you're using a PC I can't help ya. I'm a mac guy.

Very Nice - would help top have some action in the clips as singing by itself does not show off the effect as well as say things falling, jumping, water, etc.
  • I see where you are coming from. But like the video title says, it's just an initial test. I plan on doing more of this with all sorts of crazy stuff happening. :) I think the slow mo looks good in this because there wasn't a ton of motion going on in the background or with my friend singing. He kept pretty still and that seems to show good results. I did another test with this on myself rapping to a faster beat song and even though the voices lined up, the motion blur and frame blending looked awful.

how do we do this nice effect is there a site i can go to?
  • What software do you use? I used Final Cut Express and After Effects to achieve this but it's also how you shoot it with your camera. I shot it at a high shutter speed, like 1500.

kool kool yah im using after affects and FCP as well.
  • ok well one place you can get some pretty good info on this stuff and other cool things is VideoCopilot.net. From there, there's a "Basic After Effects Training" section that has a cool tutorial on time remapping. Check it out to get started. Good luck :)

looks great! what'd you shoot it on?
  • Hey thanks a lot, James. I shot this with a Sony FX1 and added the fake depth of field in After Effects.

don't mean to pry on your secret recipe, but did you use just a regular gaussian blur effect with feathered edges? amazing how good the DOF looks.
  • No worries man. I like answering questions about this kind of stuff. Yea, just a normal gaussian blur with feathered edges. I use it quite often

Looks great, I've done this but a little more subtle in some of mine. Didja shoot in 24p with the higher shutter speed or 60?

    - Ray
  • Thanks a lot. I use a Sony FX1 which, unfortunately, does NOT shoot in 24p. I just shot this with a high shutter speed.

oh my, very well done i have to say. Im thinking of getting one of these Canon HV20 or 30. As you may know the HV30 isent much improved but, what do you think?

Was it hard to find the perfect speed of the sont to sync the whole thing?

    Keep you vids coming!
  • Thanks man. It actually wasnt that hard to sync up the video. I simply sped my track up to 200 percent and played that back so the "actor" could lip to it. After that, we imported the footage and slowed that down 200 percent. Then it was just a matter of taking the normal speed song and lining it up in FCE.

great stuff .. i gotta make a charity music video in may,
its a slow song, so i need the slomo thang lol..

i got logic 8 , so would i speed up the song x2 and shoot normal speed? then in fcp reduce the footage speed to half ?

    any advice welcome :-)

i thought there might be a formula to work out to how much to speed up the song
  • Yea basically. Just speed the song up first to 200 percent or whatever you want, save it out, then play it while your talent sings along to it at "chipmunk" speed. You then have to slow down your video footage the same comparable amount to sync back up to the normal speed song. it'll take some finicking to get it just right but should look good in the end. Good luck!

  • Nope, just shot at 60i on a Sony FX1 and then slowed down in After Effects with the time remapping function.
