We first laid eyes on The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer (HAM) when they made the top 20 of the Peak Performance Project (peakperformanceproject.com). After watching just one foot-stomping Youtube video, we were hooked.
It took a few months of pestering, harassing and borderline stalking before Matt and Shawn found space in their busy schedule of gigs, festivals, and raising young families. It was well worth the wait.
For the first time, we decided to shoot something a bit more conceptual for the music video, shooting from the point of view of two audience members. This was aided by the fact that we were also shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary, though probably a little bit hampered by the fact that our music video director (Greg Gillespie) was suffering from pneumonia on the day of the event. At one point he even asked for "a spotter".
Greg toughed it out and you'd never know from the end result. It's an incredible feat to shoot a video like this in a room of 130 people you've never met, and even more so considering he could barley stand up.
Matt and Shawn lead the room of people through the song, a lucky few joining Matt's posse of percussionists, while the boys worked up parts for pianists that included people who'd never touched a keyboard (and Dan Moxon of Bend Sinister, who's pretty special when given anything that can make a noise).
The whole production - the event, the videos, and even the bus that picked everyone up - wouldn't have been possible without the support from the masterminds behind TELUS Optik TV's community programming channel, Optik Local (optiklocal.com). For those of you with TELUS’ Optik TV, both videos are already available to watch through Optik’s video on demand, find it under Optik Local.
Big thanks to our community partner, The Cascade Group, who dish out fine food and libations from four of Vancouver's best watering holes (Cascade, El Camino, Habit, and my personal favorite - The Union).
And a grand salute to those who provided the special sauce - the big red cans of joy were present once again as Main Street Pilsner (mainstreetpilsner.com) got everyone lubed up and ready for action.
