A film featuring a group of extremely talented Barefoot skiers on Lake Lanier in north east Georgia. This was shot completely handheld with the assistance of a SteadiStock gunstock mount. it was still a challenge overcoming the G-forces generated by the ultra high-powered ski boats used in the filming of this piece and of course the wakes of other boats. It was a wonderful learning experience on the 5Dmk2 and FCP.

On a personal note.. What a great group of people! I had the best time! and I would like to thank Betsy Anderson for putting this whole thing together for me!
I would be thrilled to work with this awesome group of people any time!!

Wow! The camera work on this was phenomenal! Betsy and the gang were off the charts too! I really enjoyed this one. How did you compress it down to under 1 Gig though?
  • William Rich 4 months ago
    Thanks Chris!
it took me a LONG time to figure out the FCP workflow.. but here goes.. I edit it full 1080p then create a quicktime movie full resolution which ended up to be 2gigs... then use compressor to make a version for vimeo..which is H.264 1280x720 and that version ended up being just over 322 megs.. Go to the help section in vimeo and there is a video showing the setup which was very helpful..

    Really top image quality.

With the shoulder brace set up, what lens was employed, (it's very stable). ?

    Well Done.

for now I have the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens
it's a pretty good all around lens.. although on this shoot I found that fully zoomed in you loose about 1/2 an F-stop or more.. but I'm very pleased with the lens performance! I need to get some ND filters BAD!!

What aperture settings were you using? It looks like you had a pretty deep depth of field for a lot of those shots.

  • William Rich 3 months ago
The 5Dmk2 has an 'in camera' aperture and doesn't really have a readout of the settings.. but I can tell you that in the dark the ISO was around 5000 and the aperture was wide open.. and during the daylight the ISO was 100 and the aperature was at it's lowest setting(which would explain the deep DOF).. I really need to get an ND filter..

Didnt Canon release a firmware update that allows manual control of ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed all in video mode? Thats what I got here:

  • William Rich 3 months ago
Yes.. matter of fact the camera came with the firmware update already on the cam..
If you look at some of the shots in the video you can can see where I was adjusting the aperture during the shot.. unfortunately this is a still camera.. so there's no smooth way to do this.. it clicks up and down in increments making the adjustments more noticeable..

Very nice footage! love the shots when they are on the close up bar spinning around.... water looks as smooth as glass in some shots. what mic did you use? did you have any water protection on the camera ? again great work - look forward to seeing more of your stuff !

    Thanks Sebastian!
I wanted to keep the camera profile as small as possible so I decided to just use the built in mic on the camera.. there was no water protection for the camera, the boats used are designed for barefoot skiing and have very shallow v hulls like a drag boat and they run very fast and flat in the water with little wake or spray. I was worried more about staying steady the boat more than getting the camera splashed.. The boats had huge V8 engines and got up to speed in seconds!
