Post Production - Week 88
I was up late last night working - and decided a video update was long, long overdue. I've been finished up on a huge step of post-production for almost two weeks now, and I've been waiting to make that announcement on video.
Also - and more importantly, I need people's input on what the next step for me should be.

I work very well in collaborative settings also, and that was a hard part of leaving CA for several months... but Amanda and I's schedules hadn't been lining up for months anyways... still, I've been trying to clear my head a bit.
But I'm not really in a position these days to go too long without working on Pedal. That was half the idea too - that the pressure here would be more intense :P
I lost track of what I was rambling about. But thanks for watching and for the advice! :)
I think you should go for a bike ride. Haha, as corny as that sounds. Summer is just about cresting the horizon. Get out there, relax, take a short trip on a bike, enjoy the experience again, without commitments, hassles, or obligations of expressing all that deep metaphysical bike stuff, and just enjoy not thinking about it. Then get back, hunker down.... and this is my opinion: Do another sixty-four days. Every one of those has been poetic, beautiful, and evolving, so why not let evolution take its course, and write a new chapter in your story? You did kinda leave us all hanging at the cliffhanger ending of the last episode, and I would like to know what's the significance to the whales...??
Well, that's probably more than my two cents worth. Also don't forget that we are all incredibly humanly imperfect and most often our own harshest critics, so lighten up, without the giving up ;)
I'm always trying to find a better balance between what I have to do and when I'm going to do it... especially regarding the order.
I would love to go on a bike ride actually - even just for a long weekend... I can try to plan for that soon, I would just run off right now but I'm a little tight on my budget this month. And actually my brother, Nick, is on a bike ride around upper Michigan right now, so it would have been great timing. But I do go for nice rides around Ypsi. And it is very helpful to be on my bike.
I *did* leave everyone hanging ;) and I didn't mean to. I've actually been working on some things to try to help put Amanda and I in a better position to finish up a few more of those this year. But it's gonna be hard.
Thanks for the great comment Zach! I'll be working on a post today about what the next steps in Pedal are.
But the truth is that we are all waiting to go see your film Mike. I have put aside my money to go see it. And its a total success no matter what happens. I enjoy 64 days too but would like to see the feature film as I bet we all do here at VIMEO. Editing is an art form. One that takes a lot of patience and determination. Its amazing that you have taken what I believe to be over 20 hours of footage and compressed it down to 4 hours. Wow now you are almost to the finish line. So my feelings are is to get out of the house for a day or so and comeback fresh. Attack the first scene and the rest will follow. The people of Bali always believe that imperfection is a blessing. I hope that helps in some way. Best to you Mike Ambs.
And I agree about focusing on the film - I'm working on a post today about the next steps for Pedal / FToM... but I'm not in a position right now to work on 64 Days... it would be unfair to Erica I think. And I *need*, personally, to make a few more leaps forward on the film before I can relax I think.
I'm very flattered you are looking forward to FToM - I'm trying very, very hard to put something together that won't let all the people who've been so supportive down... that would be awful. I know we can't please them all, but still.
The footage I had been working to narrow down was about 110 hours. So it was a lot to comb through. Thanks for the great comment! It got me geared up.
do you have a storyline/outline for how your final edit will be?
Perhaps that's part of my problem... maybe I need some better organization. If someone else wouldn't want to make sense of it all, how am I supposed to?
Have you been editing alone still? Or do you have support now?
Originally, I was going to suggest a 64 Days - both because I really enjoy the episodes and also it'd provide a break from editing the film 24/7. However even then you're still sitting in front of the computer and working in Final Cut and for me, that would make me feel "stuck".
So my vote goes for taking some personal time to reflect on yourself and not on the film. Second choice would be 64 Days.
But yea, I think taking some time to think and then pushing hard on FToM is my best option right now.
song for Progect Pedal ftom. If you are open to it. And you
like it.
64 Days was almost a complete work as it is so don't let it be a big distraction. Remember, I thought the 64 days was really good when we screened it, and didn't care for the redo. Episode 8 had such a great story arc with a natural beginning, middle and a bittersweet end, and now it sort of drags. So here's a warning -- and the ultimate back-handed compliment: You can't always improve on what's already great -- without danger of diluting it.
Or maybe go shoot some more B roll -- and round that 4.5 hours up to 5 -- then do the slash and burn.
