Lesson plan: "Making Okonomiyaki in Japan"

Objective: By the end of the class, students should be able to use the transition words, "First," Then," and "Finally," and should gain familiarity with some simple cooking directions.

Materials: Making Okonomiyaki in Japan" foodcutouts (see pdf file), video

Prep: Make 1 copy of each worksheet for each group of 4 children. Cut along the dotted lines (a paper cutter can make this step go quickly)

Put each set of picture cards and words in an envelope.

ACTIVITY

1) The teacher demonstrates with gestures the words "spread," "sprinkle," "add," "break," "flip" and "spread." [note: should these be demonstrated as phrases, like "spread your batter"? etc.? Might be easier...) Students repeat the words and gestures.
2) Show the video.
3) Explain that the students will now try to make their own "okonomiyaki." Break students into groups, and give each group an envelope. As students open the envelopes, ask them which comes first? Once someone says "spread the batter" Say, "then what?" and have students compete to be the first to put the cards in order. Okonomiyaki Whoever puts the cards in order first, gets to demonstrate making okonomiyaki (with picture cards and gestures) for the class.
4) After the demonstration, ask students what foods they had for breakfast or lunch. When someone says an easy to make food, ("cereal," "a sandwich," or something like this), get the class to teach you how to make the food ("What do you do first?"and write the simple "recipe" on the board). Students can draw the steps next to the instructions

EXTENDED ACTIVITY OPTION: Students can start a class recipe book, with simple instructions on foods that they like to make. At the end of the semester/course, each student could get a copy of the class recipe book.
