1. Fields of Gold: Lifting the Veil on Europe's Farm …
2 years ago
The European Union spends €55 billion a year on farm subsidies. Until recently the question of where the money goes was a closely-guarded secret. But thanks to a campaign by journalists, researchers and computer programmers, European taxpayers now have the right to know how their tax money is spent. This short film tells the story of farmsubsidy.org.

Good job! However, it should be added that it is individual Member State who decides how the farm subsidies are spent! I would love to see how the policies of the various national ministries differ concerning the distribution of the money and if the "little" farmers actually know who to contact. Maybe the Member States should set themselves a rule to limit farm subsidies to farms with up to 50 employees etc. ?

    Hi Joanna,
While there is some discretion for certain parts of the CAP (e.g. rural development / conservation), the rules for the vast majority of farm subsidies are agreed at an EU level in Brussels - by the Commission and the Council. If the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, the Parliament will join the decision-making process.
