I shot this film in april 2006 during a 3 week stay in NYC. It was an incredible time, the city holds so many surprises. I shot it with a Canon 400D (ruining it, the shutter gave out :-)
I´ve had lots of help with this project, enabling shots from the german embassy and even out of the 44th floor of the Crysler Building. It is the first of a series of city portraits , coming soon: Hong Kong, Shanghai and Istanbul so stay tuned.

Stunning. I love the shot of the rowboats the best!

What did you shoot this with? Are most of the the pans, zooms, etc done in post?

1:35 reminds me of a very similar shot in Koyaanisqatsi with a guy working at a bookcase in his office and the busy street well below him. Great work.

could you please tell us what kind of camera you used? what resolution? what post p.: final cut? what color correction?
    great vid.
  • Max Moos 2 years ago
Hi Max, i used a canon 400D, although it didn´t survive.
I assembled the whole thing in After Effects, Final Cut should work too. Cheers!

Thanks for the response Max- I was wondering what software you used also.

It is amazing those things one can do with a still camera. I presume it was a Canon 5D?

Nice visuals only let down by the soundtrack. I experimented with a few different pieces but the one that adds gravitas to your movie is the main title theme to 'Taxi Driver' by Bernard Herrmann, it totally transforms your film, try it for yourself, it's short so play it twice back to back. Good job.
  • Travis Johansen 2 years ago
The quiet sound track contrasts (maybe contradicts also) the crazy busy-ness of the city and all the information being spewed at the viewer. a more upbeat song would definitely pump things up a bit.

This is perhaps one of the best videos I've seen of NYC. It's been almost a year that I have been there but right now after seeing this vid I want to go back NOW!

It is funny that the scenes in your video appear almost in the same order I have visited them on my trip. I feel very nostalgic now, thank you!

Beautiful. I especially like the fact that you can't see the buildings at first in the fog/central park shot. The moon is very nice. The skyline still looks weird to me without the WTC.
