How can a few minutes of a football game turn the life of an entire family upside down? What do the ‘men in black’ feel while suffering assaults from fans? ‘Kill The Referee’ reveals the secret life of football referees, behind the scenes of a major international competition.
The English referee Howard Webb was expected to be appointed for the Final of the EURO 2008, but after a correct decision he takes against the Polish team, a controversy arises. All Polish fans will smear at him, including the Polish Prime minister who states the night of the game that he wishes to 'kill someone'.
For 15 years, the Belgian producer Jean Libon has stunned the European audiences with his genuine and unique style of 'Fly on the wall' documentary filming. Familiar with the most controversial topics and unusual characters, Libon likes nothing better than to provoke. Having thought about developing a film on high level refereeing for eight years, he was finally given the opportunity by UEFA at EURO 2008.
Jean Libon's request for a 'full editorial license' and 'unlimited access' raised much debate but the European football federation (UEFA) ultimately decided to open its doors, thanks to the support of its maverick president Michel Platini. The production team was finally able to shoot the film, under the direction of Yves Hinant. A group of talents ranging from art director Josh Norton to sound designers David Gillain and Van Romaine, as well as the editor Francoise Tourmen and color grading expert Mike Joris, contributed to this new genre film.
