Day two of shooting with Omar Saad and the RED ONE camera. I made the music for this one.

Thanks for coming out and making this possible: Omar Saad, Cameron Mott, Justin Moore, Henry Bruington, and Richard Fusillo!

This camera is just fantastic! I'm still trying to figure out the workflow though. I let the thing sit and render for 5 hours and it messed up, so I had to do it again. Getting all the 2K footage to export right and getting all the 4K footage to export right is a pain.

    awesome dude. awesome.

  • Is it heavy for the handheld stuff? Post some pics of it if you have them. How much did your buddy spend on this thing?
  • Jared Levy plus 4 months ago
The camera alone is 17k but you need a lot more than that to use it properly. If you go all out and get the works...it'll run you 100k.

IT IS SOOOOOO HEAVY! Oh my god, it's like barely acceptable, hopefully the scarletts are lighter. I did some handheld stuff that I'll upload once I feel like waiting around for it to render.

The camera setup we used was pretty basic one here's a photo of it. twitpic.com/ejp4a

This camera it's incredible. Good takes Patrick,
thanks for sharing. Hey, good music too.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 4 months ago
Hey thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked the music too!

  • Loved the profile shot. To do the shot with the sun you would have needed lights on the talent to keep the over exposure down. The 2K & 4K modes are only neccessary for large screen projection, if you are not doing that, it's completely unnecessary and not noticable and a waste of time. Think of it like shooting a picture with a 12mb camera and and showing the picture at web size and quality, it's just overkill.

Thanks steve! What I'm having problems with are my export settings for the 4K and the 2K files working together in final cut without having to render all the time.

Very nice. What software did you use to write the track? It's also very cool.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 4 months ago
Thanks! I used reason to make the music. Usually I use garage band but the reason orchestra sounds are amazing!

  • Patrick Lawler plus 3 months ago
is there an official release date yet?
  • Focal Bliss plus 3 months ago
I dont think there is an "official" date. But, last sunday I overheard Ted Schilowitz say "in 2 months" for the Scarlet. As with anything with RED ~ that could change.

The magic of magic hour! My favorite element is the light reflecting off the splash drops. Like a strobe on shower from a zest commercial. Nice work!

    awesome,
    no doubts RED is great,
but I'm more impressed with the music, what did you use,
    thanks for sharing.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 months ago
    Thank you!
I used "reason" to compose and program the music. It's an amazing program, and the orchestral synthesizers are unbelievable!

the shot of jmo and henry jumping from the side is supperr epic.

also the music is really good, perfect actually, it's cool to hear something from reason instead of garage band haha. you should hit me up if you ever want me to do music!

I hate to be the only one offering any criticism, but the wide shot is overexposed. It's a common mistake among red camera shooters. If you just had closed aperture another stop and a half, then it would be the perfect shot and you could then handle the less exposure at the end of the shot easily with keyframing the gain in grading. Otherwise, great job.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 months ago
Thanks for the feedback! I always try to embrace and encourage criticism as much as I can.

Which wide shot are you referring to? The shots of them silhouetted, or the shot of both of the guys jumping off the pier from the side?

Did you mean the background was too bright? Can you keyframe the grading in RedCine or RedAlert?
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 months ago
I'm sure you use other programs to color-grade. I was just curious.
  •
  • Jake Blackstone plus 2 months ago
Yes, the silhouetted shots at the beginning are overexposed. At the end of those shots the exposure is spot on. No, there is no keyframing in RC or RA. Both programs are not designed for grading, just for transcoding to QT or DPX for grading later. I use Lustre and Scratch for my grading.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 months ago
aaaah okay. Well thank you! What I think I was doing, was trying to split the difference between the underexposed (in shadow) area of the water below the pier, and the bright sunlit mountains.

As far as over-exposure goes are you talking about the exposure of the sun and its reflection in the water where the whites crush really early, and there's that big white blob where the sun should be?
  •
  • Jake Blackstone plus 2 months ago
Yeah, the highlights are little blown out in the water and so is the sky. It's possible, that the actual exposure is fine and the shot just need a little more finessing. If you'd like, you can send me the r3d file and I can look at it...
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 months ago
Oh that would be awesome! I have to go to school right now, but later I would love you to look at it! How do you recommend I get it to you? It's a pretty big file.
  •
  • Jake Blackstone plus 2 months ago
No problem. Anything under 2 gb can be just uploaded. Just use my regular email jake4n(at)me(dot)com and will set it up.
